On September 3, 2024, Elton John said a severe eye infection had left him with limited vision in one eye. In later public remarks, he described more substantial vision loss, including loss of sight in his right eye “for the time being.” The latest specific report cited here is from April 2025; it does not establish his vision or medical status in October 2026.

What Elton John said in September 2024

In a statement reported by ABC News on September 3, 2024, John said he had been dealing with a severe eye infection over the summer. He described its effect as “only limited vision in one eye” and said he was healing, but that the process was “extremely slow” and it would take time before sight returned to the affected eye. He thanked his doctors, nurses, and family.

That statement described limited vision and a slow recovery. It did not name the infection or explain medically what had affected his sight. ABC News’s September 3, 2024 report reproduced his remarks.

How his later descriptions changed

November 2024: right-eye sight lost “for the time being”

In remarks covered by the Associated Press in November 2024, John said he had lost the eyesight in his right eye “for the time being,” that his left eye was “not the greatest,” and that he and his team were looking into treatment. This was a later and more serious description than the limited vision he had reported in September. The account does not identify a treatment or report a clinical explanation. The Associated Press’s November report covered those remarks in the context of his documentary and music.

December 1, 2024: difficulty seeing the musical

At the opening-night gala for The Devil Wears Prada in London on December 1, John said he had lost his eyesight and that it was hard for him to see the show. He added that he loved hearing it. This was a separate public remark from the November account, made at the musical’s opening. The Associated Press reported it on December 2. Read the Associated Press report on the gala.

April 2025: an interview described vision loss since the previous July

In an interview with The Times reported by The Guardian on April 5, 2025, John said he had not been able to see anything since the previous July. That later statement describes a more extensive loss of sight than his September 2024 account. It is a dated report of what he said then, not evidence of his condition today. The Guardian’s April 5, 2025 report covered the interview.

What is—and is not—known about his condition

The public accounts establish that John attributed his vision problems to an eye infection and described changes in his sight over time. They do not identify the infection, explain what caused the reported vision loss, set out a verified prognosis, or establish what treatment he received. No medical professional’s clinical explanation is included in these reports.

The latest specific update identified in the cited coverage is The Guardian’s April 5, 2025 report. These sources do not establish John’s present vision, treatment, or prognosis in October 2026. The timeline is a record of his public statements, not medical advice or a basis for general treatment recommendations.
