Those are different kinds of lists: the index is not a checklist of dragons seen on screen, and it does not distinguish living dragons from historical names. It also is not a complete catalogue of every dragon in Westerosi history.
How to read these dragon lists
House of the Dragon is a Targaryen story set 200 years before Game of Thrones, according to HBO’s series directory. HBO’s Dragon Index is the source for the 14 House of the Dragon names below, but it does not provide a full appearance or timeline key. A name in the index therefore does not, by itself, establish that the dragon appears on screen or is alive during the events depicted.
The Game of Thrones section lists Daenerys Targaryen’s familiar trio. The two-show roster is not a complete inventory of historical dragons in the television franchise, still less of every dragon in George R. R. Martin’s books.
The named dragons in Game of Thrones
Daenerys Targaryen’s three named dragons are Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. They are the series’ central dragon trio; this list does not attempt to include every dragon referenced in the franchise’s wider history.

The 14 is a count of entries on HBO’s index, not a verified count of dragons shown on screen in any particular season. Current Season 3 coverage discusses dragons, deaths, references, and eggs, but reports can use different inclusion rules. Neither a definitive on-screen total nor a season-by-season status list is established by the index and available coverage.

This is a guide to names established by HBO’s index and the familiar Game of Thrones trio, not a complete history of dragons across Westeros. Some names may be historical, mentioned, represented, or depicted in different ways; the index does not sort them into those categories. Balerion is a clear example of why the distinction matters: HBO lists the name, but that listing alone does not settle whether it refers to an on-screen dragon, a historical reference, or a representation such as a skull.
