Peter Sohn, the director of Elemental, said he initially hid his relationship from his parents because they wanted him to marry someone Korean. PerthNow reported that Sohn’s wife is Italian-American and connected that experience to the film’s romance. The headline’s phrase “forbidden romance” is dramatic shorthand: the account describes family expectations and initial concealment, not an affair or a confirmed lifelong ban.
Why Peter Sohn initially kept his relationship from his parents
In a June 16, 2023 report, PerthNow journalist Ben O’Shea said Sohn had concealed his relationship from his parents at first because they preferred that he marry someone Korean. The report identifies Sohn’s wife as Italian-American.

Sohn also recalled his grandmother’s final words: “My grandmother’s dying words were literally, ‘Marry Korean!’” That quotation is reported by O’Shea; it conveys the family expectation Sohn described, but does not establish that he faced abuse, disownment or a permanent prohibition on the relationship. How that experience connects to Elemental
Pixar’s official description presents Ember as the only child of immigrant parents. Conscious of what they have sacrificed, she feels a strong responsibility to be a perfect daughter. She meets Wade, a water element whose outlook differs from hers, and the story asks whether the two can bridge their differences. Pixar describes the film as an immigrant story. Sohn has said New York is his hometown, while the studio notes the film’s city is not based on New York. See Pixar’s Elemental page.
#1 Best Overall
- Elemental journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire, water, land and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.
The connection is thematic, not a claim that the movie recounts Sohn’s life. His reported relationship and his family’s expectations help illuminate a fictional romance set against parental duty and cultural difference; Ember and Wade’s particular circumstances belong to the film.
Who Peter Sohn is
Sohn directed Elemental and previously directed Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur. Pixar’s biography says he joined the studio in September 2000 and worked in its art, story and animation departments. PerthNow also reports that he worked in art and animation on Ratatouille, The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. Pixar’s official career and studio history is available on its Our Story page.

What the “forbidden romance” framing does—and does not—mean
“Forbidden romance” is the PerthNow headline’s characterization. The reported details support a more precise account: Sohn initially hid a relationship because his parents wanted him to marry Korean, and the experience informed a film about a relationship across differences. The cited account does not say that the relationship was an affair or that his family maintained a lifelong ban.
