How many meals do Hobbits eat?
In the Prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring, Tolkien describes Hobbits as “fond of simple jests at all times, and of six meals a day (when they could get them).” The sentence establishes their appetite and the number six; it does not name six separate meals or say when they happen. Read the passage in the Prologue, “Concerning Hobbits”.
What meal names does the book actually give?
The clearest cluster comes during Bilbo’s birthday party. The narrator says, “There were three official meals: lunch, tea, and dinner (or supper).” Lunch and tea are described as occasions when guests sat down together; at other times, people ate and drank continuously from elevenses until six-thirty. This is an account of one unusually busy party, not a complete everyday Hobbit schedule.
The wording “dinner (or supper)” treats the two as alternatives in this passage. It does not establish dinner and supper as two distinct daily meals. Tolkien also uses meal names in individual scenes, but never gathers them into a canonical list that accounts for all six meals.

Why do people list seven Hobbit meals?
The seven-name sequence—breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper—was popularized by the film adaptation’s comic exchange. It is useful shorthand for the joke about Hobbit appetites, but it should not be quoted as a list Tolkien supplies in The Lord of the Rings.
“Second breakfast” does appear in Tolkien’s writing: in The Hobbit, Bilbo is preparing to leave Bag End after breakfast when he remembers it. That does not make the full seven-item roll call a passage from the novel. The film combines familiar meal labels into a joke rather than reproducing a complete book timetable. Does Tolkien say what time each meal happens?
No complete set of hours is given. Tolkien supplies particular times in particular scenes, and the birthday-party description places prolonged eating between elevenses and six-thirty, but it does not assign an exact hour to each meal across an ordinary day. Charts that give every meal a fixed time go beyond what the text establishes.

The books offer vivid meal scenes, but these are examples tied to their settings—not a standard menu assigning a dish to each daily meal.
