In a 2015 interview with Scroll, Hindi novelist and short-story writer Geetanjali Shree drew a distinction between what English translation opened up for her and where she said her recognition came from: English brought access to new readers and spaces, while Hindi had brought her fame. She was not dismissing translation; she was arguing that translation creates an opportunity, not an audience by itself.
What Shree meant by “access” and “fame”
Shree described English as a way into additional spaces: an English-language market, a wider range of readers, and the possibility of reaching people beyond the language in which she wrote. As she put it, “English can give one entry into many more markets because of its spread in the world.”
Her account of fame was different. She said her recognition was rooted in Hindi readership and literary life, and that her Hindi books had sold better than their English translations at the time. That sales comparison is her unquantified report in the 2015 interview, not a published sales tally or a claim about the books’ performance today. She also said international interest in her work had reached her through Hindi, adding: “My writing continues to be routed through Hindi.” Read the Scroll interview.
Why Mai mattered to the conversation
The interviewer asked whether the English translation of Mai had brought Shree nationwide fame. Shree identified Mai as her first novel published in English. Nita Kumar took the initiative to translate it, and Kali for Women published that English edition, as the publisher was called at the time of the interview.

That history helps explain why translation and recognition are not interchangeable in Shree’s account. An English edition made the novel available to another readership; it did not erase the Hindi readership and literary network through which she said her writing continued to travel. The interview also names English translations of Khali Jagah as The Empty Space and Tirohit as The Roof Beneath Their Feet.
Translation opens a door; readers still have to find the book
Shree welcomed translation and the access it could provide, but said publication alone did not ensure that readers would notice a translated book. In her words, “But the showcasing has to be worked on for its real success.” The work she described includes publishing and launching books, promotion, and book-talk: the activity that gives a title visibility and helps it reach prospective readers.

She said a readership for translations was taking shape but remained haphazard and small compared with the readership for English originals. Those are her observations in 2015, not current market measurements. She also separated the growth in translation activity from the quality of the translations: more books being translated did not, in her view, automatically mean better translations, and some were being done more quickly rather than better.
Hindi and English as different literary worlds
Shree described English as newer and more market-oriented, while characterizing Hindi’s literary universe as older and active. Her comparison was not a current ranking of the two languages’ markets. It was a way of explaining that a book’s fortunes depend on more than the size or reach of the language into which it is translated: readership, media attention, publishing and promotion all shape whether it finds an audience.

She also resisted the idea that English translation is the sole route into a wider conversation. In her view, India and the world are polyphonic, with literary conversations moving across languages. English can extend access, but it is not the only language through which work can circulate or matter.

The interview records Shree’s perspective at a particular point in 2015. It does not provide audited sales figures, a numerical measure of translation readership, or evidence about current market conditions. Its central distinction is personal and qualitative: Shree said English had expanded her access, while Hindi had been the source of her fame so far. The account makes translation important without treating it as a guarantee of visibility, readership, or success.
