The airplane clip at the center of this story shows Brigitte Macron reaching toward Emmanuel Macron’s face as the couple arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on May 25, 2025. He recoils, then smiles and waves. Macron and the Élysée described the exchange as joking horseplay; the footage itself does not establish what either person intended. A later political reference to the clip was a callback to this same video, not evidence of a second airplane incident.
What does the video show?
Associated Press footage shows the aircraft door opening as French President Emmanuel Macron stands inside. Brigitte Macron’s arms reach toward his face; he pulls back, then smiles and waves. The couple had just arrived in Hanoi at the start of a Southeast Asia trip on May 25, 2025. The AP report and footage establish the visible sequence, but cannot by themselves establish whether it was a slap, a quarrel, or horseplay.
What did Macron and the Élysée say?
Macron rejected the suggestion that the moment showed a domestic dispute. He told reporters, “We are squabbling and, rather, joking with my wife,” according to AP. The Élysée offered a similar explanation, saying the couple were “decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around” and calling it “a moment of complicity.” These are their accounts of the interaction, not something the video independently proves. AP’s account of Macron’s remarks and the Élysée statement report both explanations.
Why did the clip become controversial?
Coverage posed the question “Slap or ‘squabble’?”—the framing TIME attributed to a Le Parisien headline. That was a question about how to interpret the footage, not a verified description of the exchange. TIME’s report documented that framing.

The Guardian reported that Russian state media and French far-right accounts amplified the clip, and that Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova mocked it. Those reactions show how the video entered political and media commentary; they do not settle what happened between the couple. The Guardian’s coverage describes that response.
Was there another airplane incident?
The reporting cited here substantiates the May 2025 Hanoi footage, not a separate second airplane episode. In June 2026, the Associated Press reported that Donald Trump invoked the Vietnam video in a later political exchange about the Macrons. That was a reference to the same clip, not reporting of a new incident. AP’s 2026 G7 coverage describes the later callback.
