Yes—Ethan Hawke returns as the Grabber in Black Phone 2, and the first official trailer, published June 1, 2025, frames his return as a supernatural threat. The film’s official synopsis says he torments Finn from beyond the grave by menacing Finn’s sister Gwen; it is not presented as an ordinary resurrection. Universal Pictures’ trailer listing introduced the sequel, which later reached home viewing and streaming.

What the trailer reveals about the Grabber’s return

The trailer brings back Hawke as the masked killer from the first film. The official synopsis clarifies how the sequel handles his return: the Grabber is dead, but he continues to torment Finn from beyond the grave and threatens Gwen. Haunted by visions, the teens set out to stop the psychological torture and confront a killer described as more powerful in death.

That supernatural framing is what “back from the dead” means here. The premise does not describe a conventional revival; it makes the Grabber’s afterlife presence the source of the new danger. Universal’s film page places the story at a deserted, snowed-in church camp in the Colorado mountains. Peacock’s guide identifies the winter camp as Alpine Lake and says the story takes place four years after the Grabber events. Peacock’s viewing guide

When and where to watch Black Phone 2

Streaming

Peacock reported that Black Phone 2 began streaming exclusively on its service on January 16, 2026. That is a dated US platform announcement, not a guarantee of current availability in every country; check Peacock’s local catalog for the present listing.

Digital and disc editions

Universal’s November 3, 2025 release announcement said digital purchase and rental began November 4, 2025. It gave December 23, 2025 as the street date for 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. Universal’s catalog lists a 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital collector’s edition, a Blu-ray + Digital collector’s edition, a DVD collector’s edition, and two-movie collections. Edition names and stock can vary by retailer, so confirm the specific listing before buying.

Universal said qualifying physical purchases at participating retailers include seven deleted scenes, featurettes and director commentary. Those bonuses are not guaranteed with every copy: check the retailer’s listing and edition details. Universal’s home-video announcement identifies the film as rated R and gives the 4K and Blu-ray runtime as 1:53:13.

Which viewing format should you choose?

Format Best fit What to check
4K UHD Viewers with a compatible 4K player and display who want the higher-resolution disc format. Confirm the edition, player compatibility and any included digital copy or extras on the retailer’s page.
Blu-ray Viewers with a Blu-ray player who want a physical copy without choosing the 4K format. Check whether the listing includes digital access and the retailer-specific bonus features.
DVD Viewers who need compatibility with a DVD player. Verify the edition and its listed contents; bonus features may differ.
Streaming Viewers who prefer on-demand access without owning a disc. Availability depends on territory and can change; check the current service catalog.

Universal’s catalog also lists two-movie collections for viewers seeking both films together. No single format is the best choice for everyone: compatibility, preference for a disc, and the exact edition’s contents matter.
