After Donald Trump won the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Ethel Cain called the country “a loveless, disrespectful nation.” In a Tumblr post reported on November 6, 2024, the singer-songwriter argued that the result reflected a deeper social fracture—not just a change in political leadership—and urged people to keep helping one another in their everyday lives.
What did Ethel Cain say after Trump won?
Cain’s post described a country consumed by hostility and desperation. “Everybody is so incredibly hateful. We are a loveless, disrespectful nation,” she wrote, according to Yahoo Entertainment’s November 6 report and Rolling Stone UK’s coverage.

She also wrote, “It’s not even about Trump at this point,” and, “There is no solidarity and there is no love.” Her point was that the election exposed what she saw as a broader problem in how people treat one another, rather than being an isolated political event.
Why did she call the United States “loveless”?
Cain used “loveless” as her description of a national mood marked, in her view, by contempt and a breakdown in solidarity. She argued that replacing one officeholder would not by itself repair those social divisions. The phrase was her political and personal judgment, not an independently established finding about the country.

Her response included a direct rebuke of Trump voters. But the post’s broader argument was that responsibility for change could not rest only on the election outcome or on government. Cain wrote: “We can’t count on the government for literally even a shred of progress or hope so just keep up the good fight in your own personal lives,” as quoted by Rolling Stone UK.
What did Cain post afterward?
In follow-up Instagram Stories, Cain shifted toward community and deliberate action. One reported message read, “Your government does not care about you! At All!” BrooklynVegan reported on the Stories on November 6, 2024. Read alongside her Tumblr post, the message reinforces her emphasis on looking to one another for support rather than expecting government alone to deliver progress.

Where can you read the original post?
Cain’s Tumblr post was later deleted, according to Rolling Stone UK. The Instagram Stories were ephemeral. The quoted wording and account of both posts therefore come from contemporaneous news coverage, not a currently accessible original post. Cain’s response was one of many artists’ public reactions to Trump’s victory, rather than a formal campaign statement or policy analysis; Teen Vogue covered other artists’ reactions.
