Elon Musk’s reported response to Mark Zuckerberg’s July 4, 2024 surfing video was a pointed contrast between leisure and work: “May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work.” The exchange followed a playful, highly staged Independence Day clip of Zuckerberg surfing in a tuxedo with an American flag and a drink.
What was in Zuckerberg’s Fourth of July video?
Posted on U.S. Independence Day, July 4, 2024, the Instagram video showed Zuckerberg surfing in formal clothes while holding an American flag and drinking from a can. Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” played over the clip, and Zuckerberg’s caption read, “Happy birthday, America!” Global News and Fortune described the video and its setting.
Global News reported that Zuckerberg clarified in the Instagram comments that the moves reflected “pure 8 month post-recovery surfing with the dry start right here.” The wording was his reported explanation of the surfing, not evidence that the clip documented a formal athletic performance.
What did Musk say, and what prompted the reply?
As reported by Fortune, Musk wrote on X: “May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work.” Contemporary accounts place the post in a reply thread after an X user praised Zuckerberg’s swagger. Fox Business and The Times of India also reported that context.

The line’s contrast is plain: Musk cast Zuckerberg’s holiday clip as leisure and presented himself as preferring work. The reference to yachts was part of Musk’s quip; these accounts do not establish whether it described Zuckerberg’s actual activities at that moment.
Why did Musk take a dig at Zuckerberg?
The immediate context reported by the outlets is the favorable comment about Zuckerberg’s swagger that Musk replied to. His wording reads as a jab, but the reports do not establish his personal motive. It is therefore safer to describe what he said and where he said it than to claim the post proves jealousy or another private feeling.
