Why did Erin Andrews keep her cancer quiet?
Andrews described privacy as a combination of personal and professional considerations, not a single reason. In a 2018 interview with SELF, she called cervical cancer “a very personal matter” and said people were not talking about it openly. She also said she wanted to concentrate on the football season and Dancing With the Stars.
The subject felt intimate and rarely discussed
Andrews said cervical cancer was not getting much attention at the time. Keeping the diagnosis private let her decide when and whether to talk about something she considered personal, rather than feeling obliged to make it public.
She worried about raising it at work
In an interview recounted by Sports Illustrated in June 2017, Andrews discussed the challenge of dealing with the diagnosis in a male-dominated football environment. The workplace context shaped how she thought about sharing a private health issue with colleagues.

She did not want another personal crisis to define her publicly
Andrews had recently been at the center of intense public attention during a civil trial. The January 2017 Sports Illustrated / The MMQB account connects that experience with her reluctance to bring another personal problem into public view or be perceived as continually adding one more issue. She also said she initially did not want to believe the diagnosis was “that big a deal.”
When did Erin Andrews reveal her cervical cancer diagnosis?
Andrews was diagnosed in September 2016, according to the January 2017 Sports Illustrated account. She spoke publicly about it in January 2017, as the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl approached. She had considered telling a story about returning to normalcy earlier, but did not pursue it then.

What did she say about treatment and returning to work?
Reports published in January 2017 describe two procedures during the 2016 football season. The Associated Press report republished by CBS News says Andrews had surgery on October 11 in Los Angeles, returned to the sidelines five days later, and underwent another procedure on November 1. Later that month, she was told radiation and chemotherapy would not be needed. Separately, the June 2017 Health Magazine coverage says she flew to Green Bay two days after the October procedure despite her doctor’s advice. These are historical reports of Andrews’s experience, not a recommendation about working after surgery.

Andrews later connected telling her story with making cervical screening a more open subject. In her 2018 SELF interview, she said every person’s story is different and emphasized that, in her case, the cancer was caught early and she was able to be treated. Speaking out later did not mean her earlier preference for privacy was insincere; it reflected a choice about when to share her experience.
