She made the remark in her 2024 Netflix special, For Your Approval. The controversy centered on allegations about the show’s workplace and producers; DeGeneres’s comments about her leadership and the backlash are her own account, not a complete resolution of those allegations.
What DeGeneres said about therapy
In For Your Approval, DeGeneres said: “I was in therapy for a while trying to deal with all the hatred that was coming at me. It was not a common situation for a therapist to deal with.” The Daily Beast reported the remark when the special began streaming on Netflix on September 24, 2024. The Washington Post reported that it was filmed in Minneapolis in August 2024.
Her statement describes how she said she responded to the backlash. It does not, by itself, establish the details or extent of the workplace allegations that preceded it.
What prompted the backlash
In 2020, allegations about a toxic work environment and alleged producer misconduct at The Ellen DeGeneres Show prompted an internal investigation. ABC News reported that three senior producers departed after the investigation. The program ended in 2022 after 19 seasons.

In the season 18 premiere in September 2020, DeGeneres addressed the controversy publicly. As ABC News reported, she said, “I learned that things happened here that never should have happened.” She apologized to people affected and said she accepted responsibility for what happened at her show, adding: “I know that I am in a position of privilege and power and I realize that with that comes responsibility and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”
How she reflected on her leadership
In the 2024 special, DeGeneres described herself as an immature leader and said she had not wanted to be a boss. The Washington Post noted that, beyond that concession, she did not directly address all rumors about her behavior. Her reflections are relevant to her perspective on the controversy, but they are not a full adjudication of the allegations or a substitute for employees’ accounts.

Her comparison with an earlier career backlash
DeGeneres framed the reaction as the second time she had been pushed out of show business, comparing it with the backlash she said followed her 1997 coming out. That is her characterization of the events; it should not be taken as an objective equivalence between the two episodes.
