Elisabeth Hasselbeck returned to The View on March 2, 2026, as a temporary guest co-host covering Alyssa Farah Griffin’s maternity leave. She opened by urging civility between people who disagree—a message that landed against the backdrop of her past public criticism of the show and Joy Behar. The assignment was for a week, not a reported permanent return.
Why did Elisabeth Hasselbeck return to The View?
Hasselbeck joined the panel as a guest host during Griffin’s maternity leave. TV Insider described her as the fourth guest host to fill in during the leave. Hasselbeck had previously been a regular co-host from 2003 to 2013 and had made guest appearances since then.

Her March 2026 appearance was therefore a temporary return to the table, not an announced permanent appointment. The available reports identify the maternity-leave coverage as the reason for the stint.
What did Hasselbeck say about civil discourse?
At the start of the March 2 episode, Hasselbeck thanked the co-hosts and spoke about the value of women’s voices and the freedom to speak. She framed disagreement as compatible with affection: “Civil discourse is not dead. We might have differences of opinion, but we love each other.”

Addressing younger viewers, she added: “For the young people watching, it’s important to see that you can have, and we’ve said it before, we can hold our positions in one hand and each other’s hands in the other, and be able to just live as Americans of the freedom that we have and speak our hearts and minds.” She also said the group would be together for the week and anticipated that discussion might get “a little spicy.”
Why was her return notable?
Hasselbeck had publicly criticized The View and Behar after Behar commented on Carrie Underwood’s performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration. As TV Insider reported, Hasselbeck said on Sean Hannity’s show that the program “refused to put anyone there who has a lick of sense on most days.” She also claimed Behar wanted to attach her name to Underwood’s to stay relevant because “she knows the ship is sinking.” Those were Hasselbeck’s characterizations, not established facts about the show’s condition.

Behar was not at the table for Hasselbeck’s March 2 opening; TV Insider reported that Monday was Behar’s usual day off. In response to the return news, Behar said, “It’s fine, she’s a good kid… She comes from a very nice family.” The official Behind the Table podcast listing says Behar and executive producer Brian Teta discussed her on-air reunion with Hasselbeck in an episode published March 3.
Teta said the audience had reacted strongly to the guest-host announcements and that Hasselbeck’s return drew more reaction than he expected. He noted that she could have “controversial takes occasionally and passionate takes,” while adding that the two had worked together for 10 years and generally got along.

What happened during the March 4 discussions?
The civil-discourse appeal did not mean every discussion that week stayed calm. TheWrap reported audience reactions during two contentious exchanges on March 4. In a discussion of Kristi Noem’s testimony, Hasselbeck blamed media coverage for rising disapproval of ICE; TheWrap said the audience made an audible sound, though it was unclear whether it was a groan or booing. TheWrap also described another audience reaction during a subsequent argument about masks and masked ICE agents.
These are reported reactions to particular moments, not evidence of the audience’s overall view of Hasselbeck or of the week as a whole.
