Dragon Age: The Veilguard brings back a recognizable BioWare strength: a party of memorable companions whose relationships unfold across a long fantasy adventure. GameSpot’s review calls it a comforting return to that companion-centered approach, while noting that its real-time combat is more direct and its story less complex and nuanced than earlier Dragon Age games. “Return to form” fits as a favorable reading—not as a claim that every part of the series has returned unchanged.
What makes it feel like BioWare again?
At its core, The Veilguard follows a familiar role-playing structure: recruit companions, take on missions, develop relationships and build toward a major threat. Electronic Arts describes the player character, Rook, as leading seven companions against two ancient elven gods. That gives the adventure a clear party-centered frame rather than making its central appeal only about combat or world exploration.
The companions’ personal stories matter to the larger journey. EA says side content and companion quests can affect later stages of the story, giving players a reason to spend time with the group beyond the main objective. Creative Director John Epler described the design aim as giving players room for self-expression “in a world full of adventure and danger.” That is a statement of intent, but it aligns with the game’s emphasis on shaping Rook and investing in the people around them.
How has combat changed?
The biggest shift is toward real-time action. GameSpot describes combat as a cycle of weapon attacks, magical abilities and coordinated setups and detonations, with skill trees and three specializations for each class. The reviewer says that, after learning its rhythm, the combat becomes satisfying.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That direction places The Veilguard further toward action than the tactical roots associated with Dragon Age: Origins. GameSpot sketches the series’ later movement through the more action-oriented Dragon Age II and Inquisition’s MMO-like feel, then sees this installment as another step toward direct, real-time fighting. Players looking for a slower, more tactical style should not expect the earlier games’ approach to be preserved unchanged.
What does the “return to form” praise leave out?
GameSpot’s Jordan Ramée praises the renewed focus on companions and the adventure’s combat, but also says the game is not as complex or nuanced as past entries. That is an important distinction: the return is strongest in the structure and appeal of a BioWare party RPG, not necessarily in every layer of narrative sophistication.

The review also flags issues with the mage class. That qualification matters for players choosing a class or judging the game solely by its combat. The review’s assessment is one critic’s experience, not a universal verdict or proof of consensus among fans.

Is the return-to-form case convincing?
For players who missed the feeling of assembling a team, learning its members’ stories and taking them through a substantial fantasy conflict, GameSpot’s review makes a persuasive case. Its reservations are just as useful: the combat leans harder into real-time action, the narrative is judged less nuanced than earlier games, and the mage class has shortcomings in the reviewer’s view. The result sounds recognizably BioWare, but not like a simple restoration of the series’ past.
