Eminem and Moby’s clash at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards followed Moby’s criticism of Eminem’s lyrics as misogynistic. Onstage, as Eminem accepted Best Male Video for “Without Me,” he answered boos with a line about hitting “a man with glasses”—widely understood as a jab at Moby. Moby later said the hostility had begun off camera, with an insult and a threat.
Why Eminem and Moby were at odds
The immediate context was Moby’s public criticism of Eminem’s lyrics as misogynistic. CBS’s contemporaneous report connected that criticism to the hostility at the awards ceremony. The accounts establish a public dispute, not a long-running personal relationship: Moby wrote the next day that he had never met Eminem before that night.

What Eminem said onstage at the 2002 VMAs
At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, Eminem won Best Male Video for “Without Me.” As he accepted, he responded to boos with a remark about hitting “a man with glasses.” CNN’s August 30, 2002 broadcast transcript and CBS’s report both record the line and its context; the remark was understood as directed at Moby.
“Without Me” was a major winner that night: CBS reported that Eminem took home four awards for the song. CBS’s page displays an August 27, 2002 date, although its account describes a Thursday-night ceremony and aligns with the August 29 VMAs. The ceremony date and the page’s displayed date should therefore not be treated as interchangeable.

What Moby said happened off camera
In a journal entry dated August 30, 2002, Moby gave his own account of the encounter. He wrote that he first thought the situation was funny, then said Eminem insulted him and threatened to beat him off camera. Moby also wrote that they had not met before the previous night. That is Moby’s first-person account; the contemporaneous reports cited here do not independently confirm the private exchange. Moby’s August 30 journal entry is the source for his version.
Moby said his greater concern was for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the puppet character associated with comedian Robert Smigel. In the same entry, he wrote that Eminem could pick on him but should not insult the puppet, whom he called his hero. The Television Academy’s undated VMA history also describes the Triumph confrontation and Eminem challenging Moby to fight if he kept booing.

What is known—and what is only a later recollection
The onstage remark is documented in both a CNN transcript and CBS’s report. The alleged off-camera insult and threat come from Moby’s account, rather than independent confirmation. A separate detail belongs in a more cautious category: a 2023 NME interview’s search-result excerpt attributes to Moby a recollection that Smigel brought the two together and that Eminem punched the puppet. The NME page could not be directly opened, so that detail is best treated as an attributed retrospective recollection, not as established contemporaneous reporting.
