Jeff Hiller won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series over Ford for Shrinking; Britt Lower won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series over Bates for Matlock. Calling those results “unexpected” is an editorial judgment, not an official Emmy designation.

Why these were losses, not nomination snubs
A snub generally refers to a performer or program missing out on a nomination that observers expected or advocated for. Ford and Bates both made the 2025 ballot, so their results were ceremony-night losses, not nomination-day snubs. The Television Academy’s records establish the nominations and outcomes; they do not establish that either performer was a predicted favorite.
What stood out in the 2025 nominations?
Record turnout and nomination totals
In its July 15, 2025 announcement, the Television Academy said voter turnout was the highest in its history, but gave no numerical count in the announcement. The Academy named The Penguin the most-nominated limited or anthology series of the year, with 24 nominations. The Studio received 23 comedy nominations, tying the single-year comedy-category record previously set by The Bear in 2024. The Academy’s announcement also identified 15-year-old Owen Cooper as the youngest nominee in the history of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

#1 Best Overall
Ford’s first nomination and Bates’s milestone
The Academy included Ford among 33 first-time nominees. Separately, the Associated Press reported on July 15 that Bates, 77, was the oldest performer nominated in the lead drama actress category. Those are nomination milestones; they do not change the ceremony results. The Academy’s performer-history record for Bates lists 15 nominations and two wins as of July 15, 2025, while its performer-history material for Ford identifies his first nomination.
Shrinking’s broader showing
The Associated Press’s July 15 nomination-day overview reported that Shrinking earned seven nominations, including comedy series and acting nominations for Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie and Ford. That broader recognition makes Ford’s nomination part of an ensemble showing, but it does not make his category result a snub.

“Snub” is a critic’s or outlet’s interpretation of an omission, not an Academy award category. On nomination day, July 15, TIME included Taylor Dearden’s performance in The Pitt among the omissions it considered noteworthy; the series received 13 nominations. That is one editorial assessment, not a definitive ranking of every performer or program left off the ballot.
How the acting results fit the wider awards
The Television Academy’s official results show The Studio winning Outstanding Comedy Series and Adolescence winning Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. These program awards provide a broader view of the 77th Emmy Awards, which recognized television programming and individual achievement for the 2024–2025 season.
