He was 74. His daughter, Heather Edwards, told the Associated Press that he died from complications of a stroke.
Who was the voice behind “You’ve got mail”?
Edwards was a working radio and television broadcaster, not a computer-generated voice. He began in radio, then moved into television, where he briefly worked on camera as a weather forecaster. He later preferred behind-the-scenes roles, including camera operation, graphics, editing and station operations. He worked at WKYC-TV in Cleveland and also did freelance voice-over work for radio and television commercials.

How did Elwood Edwards get the AOL job?
Edwards’s wife, Karen, worked for Quantum Computer Services, AOL’s predecessor. When she heard the company needed a voice for its software, she suggested her husband, who had broadcasting and voice-over experience.
In 1989, Edwards recorded the messages at home. The Associated Press reports that he used a recorder in the living room; The Washington Post describes a cassette deck and scraps of paper. The accounts establish a home recording, not a studio session.

What other messages did he record?
The recording work included four prompts:
- “Welcome”
- “You’ve got mail”
- “File’s done”
- “Goodbye”
The Associated Press reported that Edwards was paid $200 for the recordings. That was the reported fee for the work at the time, not a measure of their later cultural reach.
How widely was the greeting heard?
Edwards recalled that AOL told him his voice was heard more than 35 million times a day by the mid-1990s, according to The Washington Post’s 2024 account. The figure is an attributed recollection, not an independently verified usage count.

How did “You’ve got mail” become a cultural catchphrase?
The greeting became a pop-culture touchstone as AOL’s online service reached a broad audience. Its influence was visible in the 1998 romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, which used the phrase in both its title and story.
Edwards once said he hoped people would think of him as “the mailman,” a line reported by The Washington Post. His daughter remembered that even after the greeting made him recognizable, he remained bashful about the attention: “He would still blush anytime someone brought it up.” She added, “He loved the attention, but he never got used to it.”
