Elvis Presley’s final public performance took place at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis on June 26, 1977. The crowd heard him close the show with “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” but it was not a farewell: Presley died 51 days later, at 42, and was scheduled to begin another national tour in August. The sadness comes from that hindsight—not from evidence that the audience knew they were witnessing his last concert.
What was Elvis Presley’s last concert?
Presley performed at Market Square Arena on June 26, 1977. The concert record lists an 8:30 p.m. start and estimates an audience of 18,000; Rita Rose’s contemporary Indianapolis Star review also reports 18,000 attendees. The show is identified as his final public performance in later accounts, including this 2026 Axios Indianapolis retrospective.

It was not presented as a last appearance. The retrospective reports that Presley was due to start another national tour in August. The audience in Indianapolis experienced a concert, not a documented farewell ceremony.
What did the audience see?
Rose’s review describes Presley entering in a gold-and-white jumpsuit and white boots, “bounding onstage with energy that was a relief to everyone.” It also records audience excitement around familiar songs including “Jailhouse Rock,” “I Got a Woman,” and “It’s Now or Never.” Comedian Jackie Kahane, speaking to the crowd, was quoted in the review saying, “Elvis looks great and Elvis sounds great!”

The review also raised concerns about Presley’s weight and condition, but it is a contemporary account of one night, not a medical assessment. Its fuller description complicates the image of a performance that was simply a visible collapse: Rose records energetic movement and an enthusiastic crowd alongside her concerns. Read the transcribed 1977 Indianapolis Star review for the contemporary account.
What was the final song?
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” closed the Indianapolis concert, followed by a closing vamp in the documented sequence. The concert record and the official release track listing both support that order. The recorded set includes an opening “2001 Theme,” “C.C. Rider,” “I Got a Woman”/“Amen,” “Love Me,” “Fairytale,” “You Gave Me a Mountain,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and an “O Sole Mio”/“It’s Now or Never” medley, along with further songs, band introductions and solos before “Hurt,” “Hound Dog,” and the finale. - Elvis Presley performs in Honolulu, Hawaii, in this 1973 concert. Among the 25 titles included are "Blue Suede Shoes," "Suspicious Minds," and "C.C. Rider." Elvis made television and entertainment history as this was the first-ever live concert broadcast over satellite, reaching in excess of one billion people worldwide. Why does the concert feel so sad in retrospect?
Presley died on August 16, 1977, 51 days after the Indianapolis show, at age 42. That short interval changes how the ordinary rituals of the performance can be heard: the entrance, the familiar hits, the closing song. But it is hindsight that makes them seem like a final chapter. Neither the later significance nor the sadness should be projected onto an audience that, by the available accounts, had no reason to treat the night as a goodbye.
An Indiana Department of Transportation retrospective also recounts a local story about Presley visiting an RCA soundproof booth. Paul Dinkens, who relayed what maintenance workers told him, said he did not know whether the visit happened on the day of the final concert. It should therefore be treated as an uncertain local recollection, not a confirmed detail of June 26.

Was Elvis’s final concert filmed?
The evidence cited for the Indianapolis show establishes an audio release, not professionally filmed footage. The official FTD release, Elvis: The Last Concert FTD 3CD, presents the June 26 performance from an original amateur recording that was digitally enhanced; its product description acknowledges audio imperfections. That makes it an audio document of the performance, not proof that the Indianapolis concert was professionally filmed. Other June 1977 shows were recorded for television, but those should not be confused with this final Indianapolis appearance.
