Emma Stone said she would like people to call her Emily, her given name—but she also told them they can call her Emma. In an April 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she welcomed the idea of fans using Emily without asking everyone to stop using her established professional name.

Does Emma Stone want people to call her Emily?

Yes. During a joint interview with The Hollywood Reporter published in April 2024, Stone said, “I would like to be Emily.” The exchange began when her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder explained that her given name is Emily and said he would use it in the interview, as he does with people who know her.

Stone’s answer was welcoming, not a correction or a demand. When Fielder said he would call her Emily, she replied, “You can say Emma. You can say anything.” Asked about a fan requesting a selfie while calling her Emily, she said she would not correct the fan and that it would be nice to be called Emily. The Guardian and ELLE also reported that exchange in their April 26, 2024 coverage.

What is Emma Stone’s real name, and why does she use Emma?

Her given name is Emily Stone. She explained that she chose Emma professionally because another actor in the Screen Actors Guild already had the name Emily Stone. In the 2024 interview, she described that reason simply: “It’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in the Screen Actors Guild].” This is Stone’s explanation for her professional name; it should not be read as a general account of SAG rules.

Fielder said that coworkers often call her Emily as they get to know her, and that he calls her “Em.” Stone also said that a couple of years before the interview she had told people, “I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.” She nevertheless continues to use Emma professionally, and the interview did not announce a change to her credited name.

How did she choose the names Riley and Emma?

Stone’s earlier name stories describe different periods of her life. In a 2017 interview with W magazine, she recalled trying Riley Stone at about age 16, then realizing she did not respond when crew members called “Riley” on the set of Malcolm in the Middle. She changed to Emma after about six months. “I miss Emily. I would love to get her back,” she said of her given name.

Her childhood choice of Emma came earlier and for a different reason. On The Tonight Show in 2018, she said she asked her second-grade teacher to call her Emma because she liked Spice Girls singer Emma Lee Bunton, known as Baby Spice. That childhood preference helps explain why Emma felt familiar; it is separate from her later decision to use Emma professionally.
