What did Ella Purnell say about Lucy and the Ghoul?
In a cast interview reported by Geek Culture on December 4, 2025, Purnell reacted to fans pairing her Fallout character, Lucy MacLean, with Walton Goggins’s Ghoul, also known as Cooper Howard. Asked about the pairing, she joked: “Here’s what I would say – You guys need therapy.” She added: “You can’t fix him. You can’t save him. Let it go.” Geek Culture’s interview report attributes those lines to Purnell.
Did she say Lucy and the Ghoul should be together?
No. Purnell’s more considered explanation was: “I think the relationship with the Ghoul and Lucy have is a really beautiful thing. They’re both looking for the people that they love. Let’s leave it at that.” She characterized their bond as beautiful, but did not endorse a romance. Fans use “Ghoulcy” and “Ghoulsy” for the Lucy–Ghoul pairing.
What was the interview context?
The report describes a cast conversation with Purnell, Goggins and Aaron Moten, who plays Maximus. Goggins said he had not heard of the pairing; Purnell replied that people ask her about it often. The exchange continued as teasing banter, with Goggins joking about whether Moten was jealous and asking Purnell to stop “pitching” the storyline.

That context matters: Purnell’s “need therapy” line was a joke in a playful conversation, not a formal announcement about the series. The interview account records her view of the characters’ connection; it does not establish a decision by the writers or producers about where the plot will go.

The theory at issue is that Lucy and the Ghoul might become a romantic couple. Purnell’s remarks push back on the shipping idea with humor, then redirect attention to what she sees as the emotional center of their relationship: both characters are looking for people they love. “Let’s leave it at that” draws a boundary around her explanation without confirming or ruling out future story developments.
