Farnsworth. Joined by SNL performers Mikey Day, Bowen Yang and James Austin Johnson, Bargatze used the premise to poke fun at streaming, channels and the ways people watch. Its sharpest joke was that audiences might enjoy beautiful stories on their phones while sitting on the toilet.
What was Nate Bargatze’s opening skit at the 2025 Emmys?
The sketch aired during the 77th Emmy Awards on September 14, 2025, with Bargatze as host. He portrayed Philo T. Farnsworth, the television inventor, while Mikey Day, Bowen Yang and James Austin Johnson joined him in the scene. The Television Academy lists it as an “Opening Sketch,” distinct from its separately published “Opening Monologue” video. The distinction matters: the sketch and the monologue were separate early segments, not one continuous performance. Television Academy’s 2025 awards material and the Academy’s official YouTube channel preserve the event’s video listings.
How did the sketch imagine television’s future?
Rather than offer a serious prediction, the sketch projected the invention of television into a future shaped by streaming and audience habits. Its comic premise played with the idea of more channels and more tailored viewing, then contrasted the lofty promise of entertainment with the undignified places and circumstances in which people actually watch. Variety’s account describes the inventor-of-television bit and its jokes about streaming and channels; the Los Angeles Times report likewise characterizes the opening as a sketch imagining television’s origins.
The high-art promise meets everyday viewing
The joke’s central contrast was between prestige storytelling and ordinary viewing behavior. In character, Bargatze described a future in which “the finest artists craft stories of staggering beauty” for people watching on their phones in the bathroom. The Associated Press quoted the full punchline: “We create a world where the finest artists craft stories of staggering beauty that millions of people will watch on their phones while they’re sitting on the toilet.” The AP report attributes the line to Bargatze’s in-character sketch.

Was the sketch a real forecast?
No. Its “future of TV” framing is satire, not an evidence-based forecast about the industry. The joke works by exaggerating familiar tensions: streaming changes how audiences access programs, channels compete for viewers, and people watch wherever they happen to be. The sketch turns those habits into a comic reversal of television’s grand artistic promise.
How many people watched the 2025 Emmys?
The Television Academy reported that more than 7.42 million viewers watched the full 77th Emmy Awards across CBS and Paramount+, calling it the most-watched Emmys since 2021. That number is for the ceremony as a whole, not a measured audience for Bargatze’s sketch alone. The Academy’s September 15, 2025 audience announcement gives the combined figure.
