The incident prompted conflicting accounts of how event staff responded: Twitch said the attendee was barred from returning and banned, while Emiru said he was allowed to walk away and that she learned hours later he had been caught. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy later apologized and said the company would review its event-safety procedures.
What happened to Emiru at TwitchCon?
The incident took place during Emiru’s meet-and-greet at TwitchCon San Diego on Friday, October 17, 2025. KPBS reported it happened shortly after 5 p.m. News reports described an unidentified man approaching Emiru onstage and attempting to kiss her. Emiru said he crossed multiple barriers, grabbed her and her face, and tried to kiss her.
The next day, Emiru said she was okay but shaken. She also said this was not the first time she had dealt with something similar, and that she was more upset by Twitch’s handling of the incident than by the physical approach itself. She said she would not attend another TwitchCon.
What did Emiru and Twitch say about the response?
Their public accounts differed on what happened immediately after the incident. Emiru said the attendee was allowed to walk away from the meet-and-greet, and that she did not learn he had been caught until hours later. In her statement, she said it felt as though his capture happened because her manager pressed for it, not because staff present considered the incident serious.

Twitch’s initial statement, issued October 18, said the attendee would be blocked from returning to the convention and banned indefinitely from Twitch online and in-person events. The company also said event security and law enforcement were present. Its statement announced added security at meet-and-greet check-in and more personnel around participating streamers.
Those accounts should not be treated as a single, settled timeline. Twitch described the restrictions and security measures it announced; Emiru described what she experienced and when she said she learned the attendee had been caught. The available reporting does not independently resolve the difference.

Police report
KPBS reported on October 20 that San Diego police responded to the hotel where Emiru was staying and took a report. At the time of that report, the arrest status was unknown. The reporting covered here does not establish whether an arrest or prosecution later occurred.
Twitch CEO’s apology
On October 24, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy apologized to Emiru and acknowledged failures in both preventing the incident and responding afterward. He said, “We failed, both in allowing it to occur, and in our response following.” Clancy also said Twitch had mismanaged its communications, including his own comments, and that the company would review meet-and-greet procedures and overall event safety. The review commitment does not, by itself, establish which changes were ultimately implemented.
