Maye Musk said she recognized her son Elon’s genius when he was three—but she also made clear that she could not know then whether he would go on to do great things. The remark was a retrospective recollection in a 2021 interview, not an independently verified account of a childhood assessment.
What Maye Musk said about Elon at age three
In a People report published January 26, 2021, Maye Musk recalled: “Well at 3, I knew he was a genius, but you still don’t know if he’s going to do great things.”
She explained the distinction in the same interview: “Because many geniuses end up in a basement being a genius but not applying it.” Her point was that recognizing ability was different from knowing what a person would eventually accomplish.
What was the interview about?
Maye made the remarks while promoting her memoir, A Woman Makes a Plan: Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty, and Success, during an appearance on CBS This Morning. In discussing why she was excited by Elon’s work, she recalled the early company Zip2, which she described as offering door-to-door directions and newspaper links to restaurants. She said she invested in the company early.

Maye also referred to PayPal and Elon’s later involvement in space research, solar energy, and electric cars. She recalled advising him to choose one area; he did not.
Maye’s separate recollection about Elon at 12
The People report also recounts Maye’s story about Elon creating a computer game on his own at age 12. She said she showed it to university engineering students and that he submitted it to a magazine. This, too, is Maye’s reported recollection, rather than independent documentation of the childhood event.

What the account does—and does not—establish
The report establishes what Maye said in the interview and the context in which she said it. It does not independently establish what she thought when Elon was three, or provide an outside assessment of his abilities at that age. A Futurism follow-up published January 27, 2021 repeated the central remark and pointed readers to People; it is a secondary retelling, not separate confirmation.
