On Saturday Night Live in 1995, David Spade showed a photo of Eddie Murphy and joked, “Look, children, it’s a falling star. What did David Spade say about Eddie Murphy?
On December 9, 1995, Spade delivered the joke during a celebrity-focused segment on Saturday Night Live. Biography.com identifies it as part of Spade’s recurring “Spade in America” segment, which featured the Hollywood Minute. With Murphy’s photo on screen, Spade said, “Look, children, it’s a falling star. Make a wish.” The line mocked Murphy’s career prospects; it came after the release of his 1995 film Vampire in Brooklyn. Biography.com’s account of the incident
Why did Eddie Murphy call the joke a cheap shot and say it felt racist?
Murphy explained that the joke stung because he regarded SNL as an in-house family. He believed a jab at his career had passed through the show’s approval channels, making it feel personal rather than like an outsider’s routine insult.
In a 2024 interview with The New York Times, as reported by TheWrap, Murphy said, “I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of, I thought—I felt it was racist.” He also said, “It hurt my feelings.” The characterization of the joke as racist is Murphy’s stated interpretation; the cited coverage does not establish it as an independent finding. Did the joke keep Murphy away from SNL?
Murphy was a cast member from 1980 to 1984, and he did not return to host until 2019. The joke and his objection to the show’s approval process are part of the account of his strained relationship with SNL, but the available reporting does not establish that this one incident was the sole reason he stayed away for decades.
