But the claim that the film fulfills a specific wish Smith made about Violet’s fate is not verified by the accessible sources: a reported comment about not being able to continue the role is not the same as a request to kill off the character.
What is Downton Abbey 2?
“Downton Abbey 2” is Downton Abbey: A New Era, the second feature film in the series. Focus Features dates its release to May 20, 2022, and identifies Simon Curtis as director and Julian Fellowes as writer. The story follows a film crew arriving at Downton while some of the Crawleys travel to the South of France over a mystery in Violet’s past. Focus Features’ film page
What happens to Maggie Smith’s character?
Smith played Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess. A New Era makes her past part of its story and portrays her death; the film’s ending recap describes it as the culmination of a plot that has repeatedly raised concerns about her failing health. TVLine’s ending recap
Did Maggie Smith ask for Violet to die?
The evidence supports a narrower statement than the headline’s literal implication. TVLine attributes to Smith a 2015 remark: “I certainly can’t keep going.” Its context is Violet’s age and the challenge of continuing the role as the story’s timeline advanced. That comment does not establish that Smith specifically asked for Violet to die in the second film. TVLine’s report

A separate search-result snippet suggests Smith once hoped Violet would already be dead when the first film opened, but the underlying article could not be inspected. Without an accessible, reliable account confirming the wording and context, that anecdote cannot establish either a specific request or a reason the sequel was written as it was. Why the film can be described as granting her wish
As a thematic interpretation, the phrase makes sense: A New Era lets an elderly character whose health has become a concern reach the end of her story. As a claim about Smith’s personal wishes or the filmmakers’ motives, it goes further than the available evidence. The film’s plot and Smith’s reported remark about continuing the role do not prove that her death was written to fulfill a particular request.

How the films fit together
A New Era is the second film, not the franchise finale. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is the separate third film, set in the 1930s. Its story addresses public scandal, financial trouble and a generational handover, including Lord Grantham preparing for Lady Mary to run the estate. Associated Press coverage
In a 2025 interview, creator Julian Fellowes described The Grand Finale as following six television seasons and two earlier films. He said of Smith’s fame, “Although Maggie had a great career before she ever heard of Downton Abbey, I was nevertheless pleased that we gave her a new level of fame.” He then speculated about what she might have said about that attention; that speculation is Fellowes’s, not a quotation from Smith. Fellowes has also said the title The Grand Finale was chosen to signal that the original conception and cast were ending. That later finale framing is distinct from the decision to give Violet an ending in the 2022 film. The Ringer’s interview with Fellowes
