What happened to Clarence Clemons?

Clemons suffered a stroke on June 12, 2011, and died from complications on June 18, according to ABC News and Bruce Springsteen’s official biography. He was 69. The stroke date and the date of his death were six days apart.

How Clemons shaped the E Street Band

Clemons played saxophone and percussion. His saxophone can be heard across E Street Band songs including “Born to Run,” “Rosalita,” “Prove It All Night,” “Bobby Jean,” “Spirit in the Night” and “Jungleland,” according to Springsteen’s official biography. His playing became one of the band’s recognizable musical signatures.

On the day Clemons died, Springsteen described their personal and musical partnership in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times: “He was my great friend, my partner and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music.
