Ultra Ego is Vegeta’s transformation in the Dragon Ball Super manga, revealed during his fight with Granolah. The story links it to destructive power he learned from Beerus and to Vegeta’s battle-focused mindset. It is not a limitless strength boost: the fight shows that damage still takes a physical toll.

What is Ultra Ego?

Ultra Ego is a form Vegeta develops through training with Beerus, the God of Destruction. In the manga’s account, it channels destructive power and fits Vegeta’s instinct to meet an opponent head-on. The reveal is part of the Granolah the Survivor storyline, not a general power guide or a separate anime explanation.

The form’s name is rendered as “Ultra Ego” in the English release. The Japanese name is 我儘の極意 (Waga-mama no Goku’i); translations can differ across editions, so a fan gloss of the Japanese wording should not be treated as the publisher’s definitive explanation.

When does Vegeta first use Ultra Ego?

Ultra Ego appears at the end of Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 74, “Vegeta vs. Granolah,” and chapter 75, “The Power of a God of Destruction,” gives the form its name and explanation. Both chapters are collected in Shueisha’s Japanese edition of Volume 17, released December 3, 2021. That edition is 192 pages and has ISBN 978-4-08-882858-9.

For English-language readers, the official Dragon Ball site’s Volume 16 announcement describes the setup for Granolah’s clash with Goku and Vegeta and directs readers to VIZ for English chapter releases. Volume 16 provides the lead-in; the Ultra Ego reveal itself is in Volume 17.

How does Ultra Ego work?

The chapter’s explanation connects the form’s power to Vegeta’s fighting spirit: as he engages in battle, that spirit intensifies. This makes Ultra Ego feel like a destructive-power path suited to Vegeta’s temperament, rather than a detached technique he uses to avoid confrontation.

That description does not establish a precise formula in which every injury produces a guaranteed, equal increase in strength. Vegeta takes damage in the fight, and his body remains a limit. The safer reading is that combat and his battle spirit are part of the form’s expression, while physical injury remains a real cost—not a free or unlimited power source.

How is Ultra Ego different from Ultra Instinct?

The manga presents Ultra Ego and Ultra Instinct as distinct paths associated with different characters and approaches. Ultra Ego belongs to Vegeta and is linked in the chapter account to destructive power learned from Beerus; Ultra Instinct is associated with Goku. The contrast helps explain why Ultra Ego suits Vegeta, but the reveal does not provide a complete technical comparison of the forms.

In particular, avoid treating the names alone as proof of detailed mechanics, or using the Granolah fight to declare one form categorically stronger. The story shows a specific battle, its costs and its limits—not a universal ranking or a settled measure of mastery.

Where does Ultra Ego fit in the Granolah storyline?

The transformation arrives in the middle of a larger conflict. The official series synopsis for Volume 20 continues the story through the struggle against Gas, with Goku and Vegeta evolving their respective ways and Granolah returning to the conflict. That synopsis establishes that the arc continues after the reveal; it does not, by itself, establish the final state of Vegeta’s mastery of Ultra Ego.

For the reveal and its immediate explanation, Volume 17 is the relevant collected edition. Shueisha lists its creators as manga artist Toyotarou and original author Akira Toriyama.
