Episode 3 ends with Annie Kowtok’s recorded voice and screams, but it does not show a clear apparition. The scene invites a ghostly interpretation while leaving open a natural explanation.
What happens at the end of Episode 3?
In the hospital, after Tsalal scientist Anders Lund dies, Pete Prior shows Navarro and Danvers Annie Kowtok’s unlocked phone. They watch a video apparently made shortly before Annie’s death. She says, “I found it,” then, “It’s here.” The phone falls and blocks the view of whatever she encountered beneath the ice. Her screams are heard after the image cuts away. The episode gives viewers a recording and an off-screen sound, not a visible ghost. The Ringer’s January 29, 2024 recap describes the scene and its unresolved question.

Why do viewers read the scene as a ghost?
Annie is already dead, yet her voice and screams reach the characters as they watch the recording. That timing makes it feel as if she is communicating from beyond the grave. But the episode does not establish that the sound is a supernatural presence rather than part of the recording and the scene’s unsettling presentation.
What are the two plausible readings?
Supernatural reading
Annie’s voice seeming to reach the living after her death can suggest that her spirit—or some force connected to her—is present. The unseen thing beneath the ice and the screams add to that possibility, without confirming it.
#1 Best Overall
Naturalistic reading
The characters are watching a video and hearing sound associated with it; the frightening cut leaves the source and meaning of the screams unresolved. Showrunner Issa López said the season supports both a reading in which events connect to the supernatural and one in which nothing supernatural happens. “It’s up to you to decide which one of those readings you are going to embrace,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

No. The finale gives a human chain of events behind the scientists’ deaths, while leaving room for supernatural interpretations of other events. That later explanation does not turn the Episode 3 phone scene into a confirmed apparition. TIME’s finale explainer discusses how the ending balances a human account with supernatural suggestion.

So the most precise answer is that Episode 3 features a ghostly, possibly supernatural moment—not a proven ghost appearance.
