There is no official NASA ranking of the most spectacular International Space Station photographs. These six standouts show why the view matters: an erupting volcano, storm and flood scenes, cities lit at night, submerged landforms, and the thin colors of Earth’s atmosphere at sunset. Each image is striking on its own—and offers a different way to see our planet.

Why the ISS produces such a distinctive view of Earth

The station circles Earth at about 400 kilometers (250 miles) above the surface, completing an orbit roughly every 90 minutes and about 16 orbits a day. That moving vantage point lets astronauts photograph a changing mosaic of weather, coastlines, cities, and terrain, but it also makes the work time-sensitive: a feature may be visible only briefly as the station passes overhead.

Astronauts often take these photographs from the Cupola, an observation module with seven windows: six side windows and one that looks directly down toward Earth. Crew members train for Earth observation and use handheld cameras to photograph features including cities, eruptions, bodies of water, and weather. NASA astronaut David Saint-Jacques described the challenge of timing and framing a shot: “Chasing the right frame is a bit of an art because you only have one chance.” NASA: Observing our Planet from Low Earth Orbit · NASA: Cupola · NASA: International Space Station facts

NASA calls the ongoing photography effort Crew Earth Observations (CEO). It is more than a collection of scenic views: observations can support research and monitoring related to Earth’s composition, health, and future, including flood analysis, volcano spotting, light pollution, and habitat monitoring. NASA reported in 2020 that the effort had produced more than 3.5 million photographs over 20 years of continuous human presence aboard the station; that is a dated lower-bound figure, not a live count. Six spectacular ISS photographs—and what they reveal

1. Cleveland Volcano, Alaska: an eruption seen from orbit

In 2006, astronaut Jeff Williams saw and photographed an eruption of Cleveland Volcano from the station. NASA says Williams was the first person to alert the Alaska Volcano Observatory to the ash plume. The image is memorable for the plume’s stark contrast with the landscape—and for the reminder that an astronaut’s view can sometimes help flag a developing event. 2. Hurricane Irma: a storm’s scale from above

In 2017, cosmonaut Sergey Ryazansky photographed Hurricane Irma as the ISS passed over it. From orbit, the storm’s immense cloud structure becomes legible in a way that is difficult to grasp from the ground. NASA notes that images of disasters can support response efforts when the station’s orbital path brings the affected area into view; they are a useful perspective, not a guarantee of coverage for every event. 3. Flooding in Colombia: imagery with a practical purpose

In early July 2020, floods in Colombia’s Orinoquia region affected more than 1,200 families and destroyed an estimated 1,600 hectares (almost 4,000 acres) of crops. Astronaut Chris Cassidy photographed the area later that month. NASA says imagery helped support analysis of flooded areas and response planning by local and national authorities. The value of the photograph is not only the broad view of inundation, but the way that view can help people assess conditions on the ground. NASA: Observing our Planet from Low Earth Orbit

4. The Iberian Peninsula at night: cities written in light

A nighttime image of the Iberian Peninsula by ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst shows bright concentrations of human settlement against the dark land and sea. NASA points to this kind of imagery as useful for studying light pollution and urbanization. The view is visually immediate, but its pattern of illumination also raises questions about where people live and how artificial light spreads after dark. 5. Cuba and the Bahama Banks: landforms beneath clear water

In a photograph made by astronaut Andrew Morgan through a Cupola side window, Cuba and the Bahamas sit among vivid blue water. The shallow Bahama Banks reveal submerged limestone hills and patterns of sediment that are difficult to appreciate from sea level. The image turns a familiar map into a textured landscape, with land and underwater terrain joined in one frame. NASA: Observing our Planet from Low Earth Orbit

6. Sunset over the southern Indian Ocean: the atmosphere seen edge-on

Image ISS023-E-57948 was taken on May 25, 2010, by the Expedition 23 crew using a Nikon D3 while the ISS was over the southern Indian Ocean and the camera looked west. Rather than looking down at a landscape, the photograph looks along the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. Its bands of color roughly correspond to atmospheric layers, making the thin envelope around the planet visible as a luminous horizon.

  • Used Book in Good Condition

The image displayed by NASA Earth Observatory was cropped, contrast-enhanced, and had lens artifacts removed. That does not erase the photograph’s significance, but it is a useful reminder to read captions: a striking published image may be a processed presentation rather than an untouched camera original. The image ID and caption preserve the distinction between when and how a photograph was acquired and how it was prepared for display. How to explore more ISS Earth photographs

NASA’s Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth makes the imagery freely accessible and accepts requests from researchers and educators. Captions and image identifiers are useful starting points when following a subject: they can identify the location, photographer, date, camera, and any disclosed image processing.
