“A good old-fashioned family barney—we’ve all had one.” Director Eamon Flack sees the appeal of Tracy Letts’s August: Osage County in the way it turns private family tensions into public drama—and lets an audience recognize feelings it might rather keep buried.

Why Flack wanted to stage this family story

Flack directed Belvoir St Theatre’s 2024 production of Letts’s play. In an interview with Olivia Senior, he said he admired its scale and its capacity to bring a large ensemble together. The story follows a 13-character family after its patriarch goes missing, gathering relatives whose conflicts have been simmering long before the disappearance.

For Flack, that setup is not simply a mechanism for escalating arguments. It creates a public space for feelings that families often suppress or disguise. “We love watching mothers and daughters go head-to-head,” he said. The pleasure, in his account, comes from seeing a familiar relationship pushed into the open rather than softened for comfort.

What the play makes visible

The mother-daughter conflict is central to the family’s attempt to imagine life after the patriarch’s disappearance. But the play’s focus is wider than one clash: relatives’ competing versions of the past and their ways of living together expose the strain beneath the family’s shared identity.

Flack describes the stage as powerful when it tells the truth “in a really unvarnished way.” The phrase points to the production’s appeal: it does not need to present family life as admirable or tidy to make it recognizable. The characters’ worst moments can sit alongside the ordinary bonds that keep them connected, leaving the audience to hold both at once.

Why recognition can feel freeing

Flack says the play gives audiences a chance to get in touch with repressed feelings about the world, family life and living with one another. Its conflicts may be uncomfortable to watch, but that discomfort is part of the encounter: a viewer can recognize an impulse or resentment without having to defend it as a virtue.

“I think that the play kind of sets us free a little bit, actually,” Flack said. That freedom is not a claim that the characters resolve their damage or that every family conflict can be neatly settled. It is the release of seeing difficult feelings represented plainly, rather than pretending they do not exist.

Other readings of the production

Hannah Story’s ABC Arts report also discusses addiction, family damage and settler-colonial history in relation to the production. Those are interpretive lenses on the play and its staging, not a single meaning that needs to replace Flack’s emphasis on candid family conflict. Belvoir’s audience notes specifically flag addiction as a subject addressed in this production.

Belvoir’s production and its documented run

Belvoir’s archived production page advertised a Sydney engagement from 9 November to 22 December 2024, while the company’s 2024 annual financial report records the Sydney engagement as 28 September to 3 November 2024. Because the published dates conflict, neither range should be treated here as a definitive account of the actual run. The archived page gives an approximate duration of three hours and 30 minutes, including two 15-minute intervals, and notes the production included herbal cigarettes.

Belvoir’s 2024 annual report records 49 performances, 10,776 paid audience members, 12,917 total audience members and $624,374 in box-office income. The production later toured to Black Swan State Theatre Company in Perth in 2025. It received Sydney Theatre Awards for Best Mainstage Production and Best Direction of a Mainstage Production for Flack, as well as leading-role awards for Tamsin Carroll and Pamela Rabe.
