Dragon Ball DAIMA appears to bring Buu back into the explanation for how Potara fusion can end—an explanation that sits uneasily beside the account of Shin and Kibito’s separation in Dragon Ball Super. The apparent conflict is real, but whether it is an intentional retcon or a continuity gap that may be reconciled is not established.
How did Shin and Kibito unfuse?
The official Dragon Ball character feature on East Supreme Kai says Shin and Kibito’s Potara fusion was permanent. It also says they later used the Dragon Balls on New Planet Namek to separate.
That account matters because it gives a specific answer: their fusion did not simply time out. They needed the Namekian Dragon Balls to undo it.
What does Dragon Ball Super say about Potara fusion?
An official Dragon Ball fusion feature says Potara fusion lasts one hour for users who are not Supreme Kais. It distinguishes that rule from the fusion’s permanence for Supreme Kais, which is the context for Shin and Kibito’s original union.

The statement is a general rule, not an explanation of every possible way a fusion might end. It does, however, make Shin and Kibito’s later separation by Dragon Balls consistent with the official character feature’s account of their particular fusion.
For manga continuity, the official Dragon Ball Super story summary is a source for the manga’s events. Manga and anime continuity should not be treated as interchangeable by default; a manga summary alone does not establish that every anime detail is identical.

What does DAIMA reportedly add?
In a secondary account of DAIMA episode 1, Crunchyroll News reports that Kibito explains Buu’s body produces a gas that cancels Potara fusion. That would provide a way for Buu’s body to undo a fusion, distinct from the Dragon Balls used in the official account of Shin and Kibito’s separation.
The episode detail is reported by Crunchyroll News, rather than established here through an official transcript. The official DAIMA announcement and DAIMATSURI report document the series and its production context, but do not address this Potara discrepancy.

Does DAIMA retcon Dragon Ball Super?
It can reasonably be read as an apparent reversal of the earlier explanation: the official account says Shin and Kibito required New Planet Namek’s Dragon Balls to separate, while the reported DAIMA dialogue brings Buu’s body back as a fusion-canceling mechanism. In that sense, DAIMA appears to restore an explanation associated with Buu after Super’s account of Shin and Kibito’s separation.
But “retcon” is an interpretation of the tension, not a confirmed statement of intent. The available official material does not explain whether the reported line is meant to revise the earlier account, describe a different condition, or leave room for a later reconciliation. It is safest to say the accounts appear inconsistent about the mechanism behind Shin and Kibito’s separation, not that the series has conclusively declared a continuity reset.
