In Luc Besson’s Dracula, Dracula lets a priest kill him after recognizing Mina as his lost wife returned in another life. The ending account says this choice spares Mina from his curse: she survives as a mortal, while the fate of the transformed gargoyle children remains unclear. The film was released in France in 2025 and in North America in 2026, so the year depends on territory.
What happens at the end of Dracula?
In the ending described by PlotExplained, Dracula recognizes Mina as his lost wife returned in another life. Rather than turn Mina and bind her to his vampire curse, he allows the priest to kill him. Mina survives as a mortal. The account does not establish what ultimately happens to the transformed gargoyle children.

That scene-by-scene account is a secondary explainer, not an official ending summary. EuropaCorp’s official synopsis establishes the film’s premise, but does not describe its final scene.
Why does Dracula let the priest kill him?
The ending can be read as an act of release. Dracula has spent centuries hoping to recover the love he lost, but keeping Mina through vampirism would perpetuate the curse that has defined his existence. By accepting death, he gives up the reunion he pursued and spares her the same fate. This is an interpretation of the ending account, not a confirmed explanation from Besson.

#1 Best Overall
The choice changes the shape of the familiar vampire defeat: Dracula does not simply lose a fight against his pursuers. In this account, his death follows a decision to stop making his grief Mina’s burden.
Does Mina survive, and is she Dracula’s reincarnated wife?
In PlotExplained’s account, Mina survives and is not turned into a vampire. The same account presents her as Dracula’s lost wife returned in another life. It does not settle Mina’s feelings after the revelation or her future relationship with Jonathan, so neither should be treated as resolved by the ending summary.

- From Academy Award -winning director Francis Ford Coppola (1974, Best Director, The Godfather Part II). When Dracula (Gary Oldman) meets Mina (Winona Ryder), a young woman who appears as the reincarnation of his lost love, the two embark on a journey of romantic passion and horror.
How does Besson’s film change Dracula’s story?
The shift is principally one of emphasis and setting, rather than proof that the film discards every familiar element. Bram Stoker’s novel is the screenplay’s stated source, but Besson’s version foregrounds Dracula’s grief and long pursuit of his lost love. In a September 2025 report, TheWrap quoted Besson: “At its core, it’s a love story — Dracula seen in a different light, as a man searching for his lost love over 400 years.”
From vampire threat to romantic pursuit
The film’s official premise begins with Prince Vladimir losing his wife, renouncing God, and inheriting eternal life. He becomes Dracula and wanders through the centuries hoping to find his lost love. That origin makes grief and romantic longing central to the character, alongside the danger associated with the vampire.
From Victorian associations to Paris and the French Revolution
Associated Press reviewer Jocelyn Noveck describes the film as romance-forward and notes its Paris setting and celebrations of the French Revolution centenary. Those elements distinguish its period and atmosphere from the Victorian-era itinerary commonly associated with Stoker’s novel, without making the film an entirely unrelated story.
From defeating a monster to a release through sacrifice
On the account available, the climax makes Dracula’s voluntary death the resolution of his pursuit. That supports a reading of the ending as self-sacrifice and release, rather than only the destruction of a monster. The film’s premise and Besson’s reported description support the romantic emphasis; they do not amount to a direct statement from him about the meaning of this final choice.
