The danger does not end with the ambush. The attacker returns the next morning with an even more astonishing scientific weapon, making clear that Senku’s group is facing more than a hazardous wilderness. The official synopsis keeps the attacker’s identity concealed, so the reveal works best experienced without advance identification.
Why the ambush changes the expedition
Until this point, the American journey has been framed around reaching a vital resource: corn. The machine-gun attack changes the problem. Senku’s group is not simply trying to survive long enough to gather supplies; it has encountered another force capable of rebuilding technology and using it strategically.
#1 Best Overall
That shift gives the episode its strongest dramatic idea. Senku’s scientific optimism remains central, but science is no longer only a means of cooperation and progress. In the hands of a rival, it becomes an immediate physical threat. The next-morning weapon escalation turns one frightening encounter into evidence that the expedition has entered a larger conflict.
How the episode builds tension
Science meets a survival emergency
The light trap begins as a practical tool for the corn search, then becomes part of a situation the group cannot control. That contrast connects the expedition’s scientific purpose to the danger surrounding it: the same curiosity that helps Senku’s team investigate the continent also exposes them to an armed opponent.
Rank #2
The escape gives the group distinct roles
Tsukasa detects the danger, while Ryusui’s quick thinking helps the party evade the gunfire. The escape is not presented as a simple scientific solution; it depends on alertness and fast decisions under pressure. That change of register makes the ambush feel like a real escalation rather than another obstacle to be solved at leisure.
The return attack supplies the cliffhanger
The attacker’s appearance the next morning, armed with a more advanced weapon, is the episode’s decisive final turn. It converts curiosity about who is behind the attack into a concrete question: what happens when Senku’s scientific ability meets an opponent with comparable ambition and force?

Who is Dr. X—and what is the episode actually called?
The official title is “Dr. X,” not “Dr. Xeno.” The episode’s official synopsis identifies the attacker only as a revived person, preserving the identity reveal rather than naming Xeno in advance. Calling this Xeno’s debut is a character-focused way to describe the episode, but it is not the official title.
The official season list places “DOCTOR VS. DOCTOR” immediately after “Dr. X,” pointing directly toward the conflict the episode has set in motion. Later continuity should not be mistaken for episode 4’s events: the official synopsis for episode 25 says Senku eventually brings Xeno into his group and resumes the moon-landing plan with him. That later development is separate from this episode’s ambush and reveal.

Verdict
“Dr. X” is the moment the America expedition stops being only a search for resources. Its machine-gun ambush puts the Kingdom of Science in immediate danger, and the attacker’s return with stronger weaponry reframes the journey as a clash between organized scientific forces. The concealed identity and the next episode’s “DOCTOR VS. DOCTOR” title give the episode a clear forward pull without resolving the conflict too soon.
