Dr. Demento’s weekly show ended with its October 11, 2025 episode, but “retirement” applies to the program—not to all of his creative work. His official archive calls the episode the show’s final broadcast, and his news page documents activity after it. Dr. Demento also gave a teenage “Weird Al” Yankovic’s homemade recordings their first airplay, helping the future comedy star find an early audience.
When did Dr. Demento retire?
The Dr. Demento Show ran from 1970 to 2025, according to Dr. Demento’s official biography. Its final episode aired on October 11, 2025: the archive identifies the three-and-a-half-hour “ALL TIME TOP 40 2541” as the last show, a countdown of the program’s most-requested songs across 55 years. Its description says, “It’s my final show, and I’m going out in epic fashion.” (Official episode archive.)

The official sources establish the finale date, but not the precise date when Dr. Demento first announced his retirement. The distinction matters: the weekly program ended, while his official news page describes him as still active and records later releases.
Did Dr. Demento launch Weird Al’s career?
There is a specific, documented basis for that description. Yankovic’s official FAQ says Dr. Demento first played the homemade recordings Yankovic made as a teenager. That early exposure helped Yankovic build a following before his first nationally released singles; the FAQ says he had an early following by the time he graduated college.

That makes Dr. Demento an important early champion, not the sole explanation for Yankovic’s later success. The official Dr. Demento biography also credits him with launching Yankovic’s career, but the first-airplay account gives readers the concrete link between the DJ and the young musician.
Why did the show move online before it ended?
The weekly show’s 2025 finale was not the same event as its earlier departure from terrestrial syndication. In 2010, CBS News, reporting via the Associated Press, said the syndicated radio distribution was ending while the program continued online. At that point, fewer than a dozen stations carried it, and Dr. Demento described radio formats as becoming increasingly narrow. That historical context explains the shift to internet distribution; it does not establish the reason for ending the show in 2025. (CBS News / Associated Press, 2010.)

Can you still listen to Dr. Demento?
Older episodes remain available in the official archive as paid streams. The archive offers individual episode streams and access through the Demento Online Club; it says listeners are buying streams, not downloads. Prices and current access terms should be checked on the archive itself. (Official archive and listening options.)
What has Dr. Demento done since the finale?
His official news page describes continuing activity after the end of weekly episodes. It lists the “Get Demented” single and a limited 12-inch Record Store Day vinyl release dated April 18, 2026, along with a T-shirt and enamel pins. The page documents those releases, but does not establish present stock or availability. (Official news page.)

What this retirement means
For listeners, the key change is that no new weekly Dr. Demento Show episodes followed the October 11, 2025 finale. The program’s archive remains the route to older shows, while post-finale releases show that ending the weekly broadcast did not mean Dr. Demento stopped all creative or public activity.
