It mixes absurd AI-generated characters, exaggerated pseudo-Italian narration and deliberately nonsensical phrases. A child repeating a line is usually quoting or playing with a meme; the clip and the child’s own explanation are the best guides to what they mean.
What is Italian brainrot?
It is a style of internet meme built around surreal animal-and-object hybrids, rapid edits and voiceovers that imitate an Italian accent. The Observatory of Youth Language and Culture describes the delivery as sometimes rhythmic, almost like children’s storytelling. The label “Italian” does not mean every line is Italian or has a straightforward translation. The Associated Press’s 2025 explainer describes the format and its characters.
Examples include Tralalero Tralala, a shark wearing sneakers; Ballerina Cappuccina, a ballerina with a cappuccino cup for a head; and Bombardiro Crocodilo, a military airplane with a crocodile head. Italian animator and teacher Fabian Mosele told the AP, “It’s funny because it’s nonsense.”
Where did it come from?
Animator and teacher Fabian Mosele told Good Morning America in May 2025 that the trend began earlier that year, when a TikTok nursery rhyme called “Trallallero Trallallà” was paired with an AI-generated shark in sneakers. That is an attributed account of the trend’s rise, not a settled origin story.

Why do kids repeat the phrases?
Children may imitate the voices, invent characters and bring phrases into everyday conversation. Mosele described the humor as absurd, easy to copy and participatory; he also said it can feel like a “secret language” that adults do not understand. Therapist Cheryl Eskin, senior director of Didi Hirsch’s Teen Line, pointed to novelty and risk-taking as part of its appeal for tweens and teens. These are interviewees’ interpretations, not findings about every child or clinical conclusions about the meme.
Ask what a character or phrase refers to, or what makes a particular clip funny. A repeated sound does not necessarily have one fixed meaning—and it is not, by itself, evidence that a child speaks Italian or is trying to communicate something hidden.

What should parents pay attention to?
The particular video
Judge the clip, not just the character name. The Observatory notes that some videos have drawn criticism for references that trivialize violence, blasphemy or human suffering. The AP also reported criticism of a clip that appeared to make light of the Gaza war. That does not describe every video in the trend, so review the actual material and its context.
Time, intensity and everyday routines
Eskin advised parents to notice how much time a child spends in the meme universe, stay curious rather than dismissive, and set boundaries around screen time and overstimulation. She suggested that difficulty focusing in class or agitation without constant stimulation can be cues to intervene. This is practical advice from an interviewed therapist—not evidence that Italian brainrot causes attention, mood or sleep problems. The available reporting does not establish a causal health effect or show how common any such effects are.

Watching, making or remixing clips may involve different levels of engagement. If you are concerned, ask about the child’s viewing and creation habits and whether the activity is interfering with class, other routines or winding down. Treat those questions as conversation prompts, not a diagnostic checklist.
What the reported numbers do—and don’t—show
In reporting published September 5, 2025, the AP said Ballerina Cappuccina had more than 55 million TikTok views and 4 million likes in the first half of 2025. Those are reported metrics for that character, not a count of children or a measure of the whole trend. The AP also cited approximately 111 million monthly Roblox users while discussing a game called “Steal a Brainrot”; that platform-level estimate is not the game’s player count or the number of children using it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Italian brainrot still popular?
The figures above describe a 2025 snapshot, not current popularity. Meme characters and formats change quickly, and the cited reporting does not establish which are popular now. Children’s media researcher Emilie Owens told the AP, “It’s very normal for everyone to need to switch their brains off now and again.” That perspective can help keep a child’s interest in context without assuming every clip is harmless or every repeated phrase is a problem.
