Yes. The Monkey has an end-credit tag featuring promotional footage from Osgood Perkins’s next film, Keeper. It is not a conventional The Monkey sequel scene. One credit-scene listing also reports the monkey’s tune and a child’s voice saying, “Gee, Bill, that sucks.” Spoilers for the ending follow.
What happens after the credits?
The tag promotes Keeper, another film directed by Perkins; it does not confirm a sequel to The Monkey. GamesRadar and Forbes describe the post-credit material as a Keeper teaser, while What’s After The Credits? additionally reports hearing the monkey’s signature tune and the line “Gee, Bill, that sucks.” That spoken detail is not consistently mentioned in other accounts.

What happens at the end of The Monkey?
Spoilers: Bill has long wanted the monkey to kill his twin brother, Hal. Years earlier, Hal threw the object into a well, but Bill later returned for it and found it gone. When the adult brothers meet again, Bill tries to use it against Hal. The deaths around them, however, do not follow anyone’s wishes in any dependable way.
Hal tells Bill that their mother’s death was an accident: he had turned the key intending for Bill to die. He apologizes for the damage that choice caused to their relationship. Bill later dies when a booby trap involving a bowling ball bearing their mother’s name backfires.

- Based on the short story by Stephen King
Is the monkey’s curse broken?
The film does not establish that the curse is broken—or clearly settle whether the monkey is literally cursed. Hal and Petey keep it and resolve to watch over it. Their choice is containment, not proof that they have made the danger disappear: the deaths remain unpredictable, and the monkey remains a threat.
What does the ending mean?
One useful way to read the ending is as a contrast between trying to control death and learning to live with a danger that cannot be controlled. Bill treats the monkey as a way to direct death toward Hal, but its effects are not predictable. Hal and Petey’s decision to guard it acknowledges that they cannot reliably direct or eliminate the threat.

That reading is consistent with Perkins’s comments, rather than a meaning the film explicitly spells out. In a February 2025 interview with Creative Screenwriting, he described the monkey as “an entity like a totem, a deity, an icon, or an idol,” and discussed the film’s exaggerated, comic approach to death. In a March 2025 interview with TheWrap, he said the monkey does not physically attack people, describing it instead as present around unexpected deaths. He also connected the brothers’ different responses to loss with his own experience of sharing grief with his brother.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is the film different from Stephen King’s story?
The film adapts King’s short story rather than retelling it scene for scene. The biggest changes are the brothers’ family structure and what happens to the monkey at the end.

| Element | Film | Stephen King’s short story |
|---|---|---|
| Hal’s family structure | Hal has a twin brother, Bill, whose conflict with him shapes the ending. | Hal is an only child. |
| Response to the monkey | Hal and Petey keep it and resolve to watch over it. | Hal and his son try to sink it in a lake. |
| Final indication of danger | The film leaves the monkey in their care without confirming that its danger is over. | After the monkey’s cymbals are heard, a later newspaper excerpt reports unexplained fish deaths. |
TheWrap identifies King’s source as a 1980 short story later collected in Skeleton Crew (1985). The film’s shift from an attempt to sink the monkey to keeping watch over it gives its ending a different emphasis: the threat is managed, not conclusively removed.
