Does Glinda recognize the Tin Man?
Chu’s reading is that she does. In an answer reported by ComingSoon on November 23, 2025, Chu said, “in my mind, she knows it’s Boq,” adding that she recognizes him by his eyes. ComicBook.com also reported Chu’s answer on November 24, 2025.

That is the director’s interpretation, not an explicit confirmation in dialogue. Chu said he did not want to define the moment exactly. Glinda’s reaction can also register the shock of seeing Ozians—including the Tin Man—cheer the Witch Hunters as they turn against Elphaba.
Why is Boq the Tin Man?
In the film’s story, Elphaba transforms Boq into the Tin Man while trying to save his life after Nessarose’s spell goes wrong, according to ComingSoon’s account. Boq wakes confused and angry, blames Elphaba for his new form, and joins the hunt against her. His appearance among the Witch Hunters gives Glinda a reason to recognize someone she knew, even as he has become her enemy.

What does Boq’s look toward Glinda mean?
Chu also interprets Boq’s glance at Glinda and turn away as a rejection. He described the gesture as Boq saying he no longer needs her, because he has found “a new family of hate” stronger than love. That is Chu’s reading of the beat: Boq’s allegiance to the Witch Hunters has replaced his former connection to Glinda.

The film does not spell out Glinda’s thoughts, so viewers can read her expression as recognition, horror at what Oz has become, or both. Chu’s explanation supports the recognition reading without making it an on-screen certainty. His comments were reported as part of entertainment coverage of an Entertainment Weekly interview, rather than supplied as a full interview transcript.
