Art Garfunkel co-wrote at least one documented song with Paul Simon: “The Girl for Me.” The official Art Garfunkel website says the song was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office in 1956 under both musicians’ names, but was never officially released.
What song did Art Garfunkel co-write?
The song is “The Girl for Me,” written by Garfunkel and Simon before they began releasing music as Tom & Jerry. The official Art Garfunkel website’s account of their early history reports that the U.S. Copyright Office registered it on May 28, 1956, as registration EU438518, listing Arthur Ira Garfunkel and Paul Fredric Simon as authors.
The website says Louis Simon, Paul’s father, wrote out the music and lyrics for the registration, and that Paul later recalled that he and Art arranged the registration together. The site places the song more than a year before the pair’s first commercial release.
Was “The Girl for Me” released?
No. The official site says it was never officially released, so the documented co-writing credit should not be confused with a commercially available recording or a song from the duo’s familiar released catalog.

Does this mean Garfunkel wrote Simon & Garfunkel’s famous songs?
Not on the evidence cited here. The registration documents a joint early song, but it does not establish Garfunkel as the writer of other Simon & Garfunkel songs. Authorship of each later song needs its own song-specific credit; Garfunkel’s role as a performer in the duo is a separate matter.
Where to explore their released music
The official discography lists Old Friends, a three-CD collection of released Simon & Garfunkel recordings that includes “Hey, Schoolgirl.” It is a way to explore their released music, not a source for “The Girl for Me”: the collection does not establish that the unreleased song appears on it.
