Spoilers for Frank Herbert’s Dune and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. Paul and Chani’s relationship is both a love story and a way to see what Paul’s pursuit of power costs. Their stories end differently in the novel and the film: Chani remains beside Paul in the book after his political marriage to Princess Irulan, but leaves him in the film.
How Paul and Chani’s relationship changes in the film
In Dune: Part Two, Paul and Chani fall in love as he joins the Fremen. Their bond gives the film an intimate counterpoint to Paul’s growing public role: what happens between them matters not only as romance, but also as a measure of how far his choices take him from the ideals they share.
Director and co-writer Denis Villeneuve described the romance as central to the film’s emotional structure: “That young man falls in love with a girl in their culture, and, at the end, the whole movie is structured around their love story.” He was describing the film’s structure, not suggesting that romance is its only subject. Film Festival Traveler interview with Denis Villeneuve.
Why does Chani leave Paul in Dune: Part Two?
At the end of the film, Paul claims power and agrees to marry Princess Irulan as part of his political ascent. Chani leaves. The ending makes the personal and political rupture coincide: Paul’s choice challenges their relationship and the ideals that have shaped Chani’s view of him.

The film gives Chani a more independent political and moral position than the novel does. Villeneuve said he wanted the final act to be seen through her point of view, giving her “her own agenda” and making her a “moral compass” so the film would read as a cautionary tale. Film Festival Traveler interview with Denis Villeneuve.
Villeneuve has also explained that Chani provides “a critical distance with Paul,” helping viewers see his transformation rather than simply experience his rise as heroic. That is the director’s stated interpretation of the adaptation, not the only possible reading of Herbert’s novel. Moviefone interview with Denis Villeneuve.

Does Chani stay with Paul in the Dune novel?
Yes. In Herbert’s novel, Chani stays with Paul after he marries Irulan. The marriage is a political arrangement that helps secure his rule; it does not mean that Paul regards Chani as replaceable. Chani accepts that she will be formally known as his concubine, while Paul considers her his wife in all but name. TIME’s comparison of the novel and film endings.
That arrangement still puts their private bond beneath dynastic politics. The distinction is that the novel ends with Chani remaining at Paul’s side, whereas Villeneuve’s film gives her refusal and departure the final emphasis.

The ending difference changes who gets to define the relationship’s meaning. In the novel, Paul’s political marriage does not displace Chani’s private bond with him. In the film, Chani’s refusal gives her convictions the final word. Villeneuve has said the shift is intended to make the consequences of Paul’s choices more visible and the story’s cautionary dimension clearer.
