Dwayne Johnson says taking on Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine changed his life—not because he has described a specific therapeutic outcome, but because the role pushed him toward vulnerability and marked a personal turning point in his career. He has spoken about drawing on childhood trauma, being scared to accept the part, and the emotional response to the film’s Venice premiere.
What Dwayne Johnson said about playing Mark Kerr
Speaking to ABC News, Johnson described the role’s significance in personal terms: “And this film, ‘The Smashing Machine,’ and this role and what it represents, it changed my life.” The statement followed the film’s reception at the Venice Film Festival, where the feature premiered on September 1, 2025, according to the Associated Press. The film and the ovation mattered to him, but the phrase remains Johnson’s own account of what the experience meant.
A CBS interview description says Johnson discussed drawing on childhood trauma for the performance and admitted to director Benny Safdie and co-star Emily Blunt that he was scared to take on the role. The available account does not specify what experiences he drew on, so it would be misleading to attach particular events to his remarks.
Why the role was a turning point for Johnson
Johnson had spent much of his screen career in prominent, physically commanding roles. For Kerr, he pursued a more vulnerable performance and a physical transformation. Before the premiere, he told the AP: “I have for a long time wanted this,” Johnson said before the premiere. “The transformation part was something I was really hungry to do.” He also described wanting to stretch beyond familiar work: “I’ve been very fortunate to have the career that I’ve had and make the films that I have, but there was just this voice inside of me, this little voice, like what if I can do more.”

Those remarks help explain what he meant by “changed my life”: the work answered a long-standing desire to take a different kind of role, while the film’s reception gave that risk a public moment. They do not establish that acting in the film healed him or produced a particular clinical or personal outcome.
What The Smashing Machine is about
The Smashing Machine is a 2025 biographical feature directed by Benny Safdie, with Johnson playing MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Rather than cover Kerr’s entire life, the story focuses on 1997–2000, a turbulent period in his professional and personal life, as reported by the AP. Emily Blunt plays Kerr’s former partner, Dawn Staples. ABC News also reported cast appearances by MMA fighter Ryan Bader, former fighter Bas Rutten, and boxer Oleksandr Usyk.

The film draws on Kerr’s story and the 2002 documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr. The documentary’s official site identifies John Hyams as its director and Jon Greenhalgh as its producer. The two works are different in form: the 2025 film is a dramatized feature, while the 2002 film is a documentary following Kerr through his career and personal struggles.
Mark Kerr’s story and the film’s era
Kerr was a two-time UFC heavyweight tournament winner and retired in 2009, according to the AP. The feature’s late-1990s setting falls during a formative period for mixed martial arts in the United States. TIME’s September 2025 account notes the UFC’s formation in 1993 and the political and broadcast resistance the sport faced in the late 1990s.

Addiction is part of Kerr’s story, but it should be described without turning it into spectacle. The AP reported that he struggled with painkiller and opioid addiction and experienced two overdoses. Those details concern Kerr’s reported biography; they are not evidence about other fighters or a general account of addiction or recovery.
