Yes. Dwayne Johnson confirmed that he wore a suit to create Maui’s bulked-up look in Disney’s live-action Moana. He told Extra it took a couple of hours each day to put on. Johnson also said paparazzi photographed the set after reaching the area by boat, despite walls intended to block them.
What did Dwayne Johnson confirm about Maui’s look?
In an interview with Extra’s Terri Seymour published November 25, 2024, Johnson said the set photos showed him wearing a suit, rather than simply his unaltered physique. “That’s a suit that took a long time to put on,” he said. He estimated the daily transformation took “a couple of hours.”

The interview answered the question raised by the first set photographs: the enlarged appearance was created with a practical suit. Johnson did not identify its maker, weight, cost, or specific construction method.
How did the set photographs surface?
Johnson said paparazzi got into boats and photographed the set area, even though walls had been put up to prevent people from seeing in. His account explains how the images were taken, but the interview does not independently establish every detail about the photographers or how the photographs were circulated.

Why use a practical suit?
A later report by The Daily Beast, published March 23, 2026, attributed further comments to Johnson’s Entertainment Weekly interview. Johnson described the suit as hot and grueling, and said the production chose a practical suit for its tactile, emotional resonance. The report reproduced his description: “It moves and breathes with you.”
That account offers a stated reason for using a suit rather than relying entirely on visual effects. It does not establish that the final film used no visual effects alongside the costume.

What is the live-action Moana’s release and cast context?
Disney’s live-action film reimagines the animated Moana, with Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Johnson as Maui, directed by Thomas Kail. Disney’s D23 published an interview with Lagaʻaia and Johnson on July 9, 2026, and said the film’s nationwide theatrical premiere was July 10, 2026. It has therefore already opened theatrically.
In a June 23, 2026 promotional interview, Extra reported that Lagaʻaia was selected from 32,000 submissions. That is Extra’s reported figure, not an independently audited total.
