Raissa Padamsee was 16 when Mani Kaul persuaded her to act in Duvidha, his 1973 film based on a Rajasthani folk story. She was shy, had never acted on film and initially said no. Looking back in a 2020 interview, she described an experience that was at once unsettling, absorbing and formative—and a film she came to admire while retaining reservations about how its influences and contributions were acknowledged.
How Padamsee came to play Lacchi
Kaul approached Padamsee when she was a teenager. She recalled that she initially refused, but he insisted: “Mani cornered me and said, you are going to act in my film, and I was so overpowered that I said yes.” He told her he had chosen her for a “pure and innocent look.” Padamsee said she did not experience that description as a compliment.
Her account holds two things together: the force of an adult director’s insistence on a shy 16-year-old, and the adventure she later associated with making the film. It is not a story of uncomplicated discovery or uncomplicated regret.
What the film is about
Duvidha adapts a folk story by Rajasthani writer Vijaydan Detha. A ghost takes the form of a young bride’s absent husband, setting up a dilemma about identity and love—and about the paternity of the child. The film was completed in 1973 and shot in Detha’s village of Borunda, Rajasthan.

“I wasn’t acting, I was that girl”
Padamsee spoke no Hindi, so her lines were dubbed. She said she did not approach the part as a performance: “I wasn’t acting, I was that girl.” She recalled feeling almost hypnotised and said she did not feel the camera, even when it was close to her face.

Kaul offered her an image rather than a conventional acting instruction: “You are the branch and I am the wind. When I blow, you move.” The metaphor fits the way Padamsee described responding to the role, though it does not erase the uneven power she recalled in how she came to be cast.
A constrained production and a distinctive visual world
The production had a limited budget and little room for mistakes or retakes, Padamsee recalled. Makeup was minimal. The cast and crew included Detha, musicologist Komal Kothari and editor Lalita Krishna, who worked on Kaul’s films; Ravi Menon played Lacchi’s husband.

Duvidha drew on modernist and miniature painting as well as Rajasthan’s musical and literary traditions. Cinematographer Navroze Contractor’s saturated images were inspired by Kangra and Basohli miniature paintings. Padamsee remembered her father and Kaul talking about colour, the structure of space and the way colour can guide a viewer’s eye.
The film’s resistance to straightforward storytelling also reflects Kaul’s stated interest in how experience disrupts a tidy narrative. In conversations with litterateur Udayan Vajpeyi, translated from Hindi by filmmaker Gurvinder Singh and collected in Uncloven Spaces (2013), Kaul said: “I have a great disdain for the linear narrative that exists, even if it is complete, even if there are many characters, even if it has a large canvas…” He continued: “The experience of life is not like this. A person tries to say one thing and 50 other things come in the way.”

Why her view of the film changed
Padamsee first saw the completed film while in France and disliked what she saw: “I reacted very badly at the time, I felt it wasn’t me.” She later watched it many times and came to call it a beautiful film—one open to different interpretations and capable of touching viewers on multiple levels.
Her admiration did not settle every question. Padamsee said she wished Kaul had been more forthright about influences and contributions she considered significant, including Akbar Padamsee’s influence and Detha’s contribution to the screenplay. That is her criticism, not an independently established judgment about credit. Her retrospective is valuable precisely because it leaves admiration beside that unresolved concern.
