Duster is a 1970s-set crime drama about a getaway driver whose work for a growing crime syndicate collides with an FBI agent’s effort to bring the crime family down. The Max Original premiered May 15, 2025, and HBO Max did not renew it for a second season.
What is Duster about?
Set in the 1970s Southwest, Duster follows Jim Ellis, a getaway driver working for crime boss Ezra Saxton. Their dangerous business draws the attention of Nina Hayes, a newly graduated FBI agent investigating Saxton from the Phoenix office. As Nina’s pursuit tightens, Jim’s life becomes entangled with her effort to dismantle the syndicate.
The official Warner Bros. Discovery premise describes the story as a driver’s dangerous work escalating when a determined young agent arrives intent on taking the crime family down. The series combines crime drama with a heightened, retro sensibility.

What gives the series its ’70s swagger?
The period setting comes through in its Arizona and Southwest backdrop, retro music, and pop-culture references. TIME critic Judy Berman characterized the show as deliberately nostalgic and high-energy. She also argued that its lighter action-comedy and its more serious themes of identity and workplace dynamics can feel like separate tonal registers; that is her critical assessment, not a consensus view.

What car does Jim drive in Duster?
TIME describes Jim’s car as a cherry-red Plymouth. The available reporting does not establish its exact model year, so identifying it as a specific year of Plymouth Duster goes beyond what is confirmed. A viewer interested in a replica should check the make, model, and year on any listing rather than assume a die-cast Plymouth Duster matches the screen car.
