The film finds comic potential in a small-town man’s phone persona, but its escalating mix of farce and sentiment is less consistent than its lead.
What is Dream Girl about?
Raaj Shaandilyaa’s 2019 Hindi comedy-drama follows Karam, played by Khurrana, a small-town man who can convincingly speak in women’s voices. He takes a job speaking as Pooja on a phone line, and callers’ growing interest in that persona sets off a chain of misunderstandings and complications.
The concept gives the film an immediate comic engine: the audience knows who is behind the voice, while the callers respond to the person they imagine. Shaandilyaa said the story is set in Mathura, with Khurrana speaking Hindi and Haryanvi in a local accent. In an interview before release, the director also connected the role to Khurrana’s earlier performances as Sita, Draupadi and Radha; the story’s explanation of those performances is part of the film’s setup, not evidence by itself of a deeper argument about gender.
Shaandilyaa told India Today that the idea began with a friend’s online interaction with someone who turned out to be a man. He said he started working on it in 2014, paused, and returned to it in 2017. He also described Khurrana as his only choice for the lead.

Is Dream Girl funny?
Often, especially when the joke depends on Khurrana’s control of Pooja’s voice and the gap between that voice and Karam’s real identity. His radio background helps make the conceit feel like a performance rather than a single novelty. In an India Today interview, Khurrana said he delivered “25 per cent of my dialogues in a woman’s voice” and used reference videos in preparation. That percentage is his reported estimate, not an independently measured count.
The trouble is that the film’s complications do not always develop as imaginatively as its opening idea promises. Once the callers and their expectations become the recurring joke, the pattern can feel more like a mechanism for keeping the farce moving than a source of fresh character comedy. The premise earns attention quickly; the script has a harder time turning that attention into a steadily building payoff.

How well do the performance and tone work?
Khurrana gives the premise its spark
Khurrana supplies energy and precision, shifting between Karam and Pooja without letting the vocal trick become the entire performance. His work is the film’s strongest asset because it gives the premise a human center and helps sustain scenes that might otherwise rest on the same joke.
The story veers between farce and sentiment
Shaandilyaa’s comedy moves between broad, sometimes sexualized jokes and emotional beats. The transitions can feel abrupt rather than earned; one critic quoted on Rotten Tomatoes described the film as swinging uneasily between smut and sentiment. The result is an uneven rhythm: a lively comic stretch may be followed by a more conventional emotional turn that does not deepen what came before.

What does Dream Girl say about women and gender?
The high-concept role invites questions about gender, but the film’s ability to imitate a woman’s voice is not the same as a developed perspective on women’s lives. Some critics listed by Rotten Tomatoes objected to thinly written female characters and jokes that lean on sexualized or gendered assumptions. Those criticisms are specific to the film’s characterization and humor; they do not make every joke work the same way, but they point to a limit in how fully the story develops the people around its central persona.
Who stars in Dream Girl?
The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Nushrat Bharucha and Manjot Singh. Khurrana plays Karam and the Pooja phone persona; Bharucha and Singh are among the featured cast listed by Rotten Tomatoes.
