Drake Bell said he pleaded guilty in 2021 because the investigation had become financially devastating and he did not want his family to endure the process after the birth of his son. In a 2024 podcast interview, he also acknowledged that he had been irresponsible in direct-message conversations. These are Bell’s retrospective explanations—not a court finding about why he entered the plea.
What Bell said about his decision
In an April 2024 interview on the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast, Bell described the investigation as financially devastating and said he had recently become a father. As reported by The Independent on April 5, 2024, Bell explained: “I had just had a son and I didn’t want to put my family through all of this anymore.”
He also acknowledged his conduct in online conversations, saying: “I responded on some DMs and was incredibly irresponsible and got myself into conversations that I shouldn’t have had.” Bell’s comments explain how he later described his choice; they do not establish the court’s reasoning for accepting his plea.
What Bell pleaded guilty to in 2021
The case was prosecuted in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In June 2021, Bell pleaded guilty to two offenses: felony attempted child endangerment and misdemeanor disseminating matter harmful to juveniles. The Associated Press reported that a prosecutor’s spokesperson described the felony as relating to a Cleveland concert where Bell violated a duty of care and created a risk of harm, and the misdemeanor as relating to inappropriate social-media messages. That description is the spokesperson’s account of the charges, not a broader finding about other allegations.

The victim made additional allegations in her sentencing statement. Bell’s attorney disputed claims involving explicit photographs and sexual contact. ABC reported that those allegations had not been tested in court. They should be distinguished from the two offenses Bell admitted by pleading guilty. Judge Timothy McCormick said he had heard serious allegations but needed to focus on the counts to which Bell pleaded. He also said Bell’s celebrity status and access to the girl had enabled him to nurture the relationship.
