No. Hatsune Miku’s official licensor is Crypton Future Media, which also says it developed the singing-voice synthesizer. SEGA is a prominent game developer and collaborator, not the owner of the character.
Who owns Hatsune Miku?
Crypton Future Media identifies itself as Hatsune Miku’s official licensor. Its official Miku page describes Crypton as a music technology company and the “official licensor of Hatsune Miku.” Crypton’s About Hatsune Miku page also says it developed the singing-voice synthesizer.
Crypton’s virtual-singer EULA identifies Hatsune Miku as a registered trademark of Crypton and defines character elements to include the character’s name, appearance, voice, and movements. Crypton’s Virtual Singer EULA sets out those terms.
What is SEGA’s relationship with Miku?
SEGA’s connection comes through games and collaboration. It developed the Project DIVA rhythm-game series and has worked with Crypton and other partners on Miku games. In a report about Project SEKAI, SEGA SAMMY calls Crypton the official licensor while describing SEGA’s and other developers’ roles in making the game. SEGA SAMMY’s Project SEKAI report was published on June 4, 2021.

SEGA’s October 24, 2019 Project SEKAI announcement provides further evidence of SEGA’s involvement in the game. A game-development or collaboration role does not, by itself, establish ownership of the character.
How ownership, software, and game rights differ
| Area | What the official sources say | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Character and brand | Crypton identifies itself as Hatsune Miku’s official licensor. Crypton | SEGA’s game work does not make it the character’s owner. |
| Singing-voice software | Crypton says it developed the Hatsune Miku singing-voice synthesizer. Crypton | The software and the character are related, but a software product is not blanket permission to use the character commercially. |
| Games | SEGA’s materials describe its game-development and collaboration role; SEGA SAMMY identifies Crypton as the official licensor. SEGA SAMMY SEGA | Game rights and development roles are distinct from ownership of Miku. |
Can you use Hatsune Miku commercially?
Crypton’s Hatsune Miku V4X product page says commercial purposes involving the character and brand name require a Crypton license. The Hatsune Miku V4X page is relevant to that licensing distinction. Owning or using singing-voice software should not be treated as permission to use Miku’s character or brand commercially.
