In March 2012, Digiboo installed 14 movie-download kiosks at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac). Travelers could rent or buy a film at the airport and download it to their own USB drive to watch later, including on a flight. The launch offer of a $3.99 new-release rental was a historical price, not a current offer; the available evidence does not establish that Digiboo kiosks or service remain available.
How the Sea-Tac movie kiosks worked
Digiboo officially launched its Seattle service on March 23, 2012, making Sea-Tac its first West Coast airport, according to GeekWire’s launch report. The company had installed 14 touchscreen kiosks around the airport, including in some former payphone locations. GeekWire reported that the launch catalog included more than 700 titles, among them Hugo and Moneyball; those figures describe the 2012 launch, not current inventory.
Unlike a streaming service, the kiosk copied a movie to storage the traveler brought along. The Seattle launch report specified a USB drive with at least 4 GB of space and a Windows PC or tablet for playback. The first use required an internet connection to initialize the service. A customer could make that initial connection at the kiosk, which supplied connectivity, or do it before arriving. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report likewise said customers supplied a flash drive and described compatibility with Windows XP or later.

| Option | Launch price | Viewing window |
|---|---|---|
| New-release rental | $3.99 | Start within 30 days; after opening, watch within 48 hours |
| Older-title rental | $2.99 | Start within 30 days; after opening, watch within 48 hours |
| Purchase | $14.99 | Not stated in the launch report |
These are launch-era terms, not current Digiboo pricing. The 2012 reports also described downloads as quick: the Los Angeles Times said a USB 3.0 transfer took about 30 seconds and a USB 2.0 transfer took two to five minutes. Bruce Rineer, then a concessions and business development manager for the Metropolitan Airports Commission in Minneapolis, told the paper that a movie downloaded to his flash drive in about 25 seconds. That was his reported trial, not a controlled performance test.
Who could use the original service
The Sea-Tac workflow suited travelers who had a USB drive and could watch the downloaded file on a Windows computer or tablet. It was not a direct fit for every device: GeekWire noted that some smartphones and the iPad lacked USB ports. These constraints matter when interpreting the launch coverage; later Digiboo announcements described broader compatibility, but they should not be retroactively applied to the March 2012 Seattle setup.

Digiboo’s marketing emphasized choosing a film at the airport rather than planning a download in advance. Chief marketing officer Blake Thomas told the Los Angeles Times, “A customer doesn’t have to plan ahead, or to have ever downloaded one of our movies before. He or she can make the decision at the airport, just like buying M&Ms or magazines.” That was the company’s pitch for convenience, not independent evidence that its process was easier than other ways to get a movie onto a device.
How Digiboo changed after the Seattle launch
Digiboo’s later announcements show that the service evolved, but they are separate snapshots rather than proof of what a Sea-Tac customer could do in 2012.

Its announcement described an initial rollout in 100 locations across the United States and Canada and a target of 2,000 locations within twelve months. It listed rentals at $4.99 for new releases and $3.99 for catalog titles, with 30 days to start watching and 48 hours after activation. These were 2015 company-announcement figures and plans; they do not establish current availability or that the expansion target was reached.
What the record does—and does not—establish
Digiboo’s Sea-Tac launch was a dated attempt to let travelers buy or rent a movie at the airport, move it onto their own USB storage and watch it away from the kiosk. It was distinct from onboard streaming: the traveler needed compatible storage and a supported playback device, but did not need to stream the film during the flight. The reports document the launch’s locations, prices and requirements, while later company announcements document proposed changes to device support and delivery. They do not establish that Digiboo is operating today or provide a controlled comparison with inflight entertainment or pre-downloaded streaming services.
