Battle Royale came first, and its premise has a clear resemblance to The Hunger Games: young people are forced into a deadly contest by an authoritarian power. But the sources available do not prove that Suzanne Collins copied Koushun Takami’s earlier novel. Collins said she had not heard of it until after her manuscript was submitted; that is her account, not independent proof of what she knew.
Which story came first?
Takami’s Battle Royale novel was published in 1999. Collins’s The Hunger Games novel followed in 2008, according to VIZ, Gizmodo and Scholastic. The earlier publication date establishes that Battle Royale preceded The Hunger Games; it does not, by itself, establish that Collins knew about or borrowed from it.
It also matters which works are being compared. Battle Royale was adapted into a film released in 2000, before The Hunger Games novel appeared. The film is not the same thing as Takami’s novel, and the film’s release date does not show whether Collins encountered either work. ABC News reports the film date and distinguishes the debate around the two stories.
Why the comparison is compelling
Both stories put young people in a lethal survival contest imposed by an authoritarian system. That is a distinctive enough shared setup to make comparison understandable, and it is the central reason the accusation has persisted.

In its comparison, VIZ also points to teens armed for a death match, a pair who work together against the game, an older mentor who previously won, and the use of signal fires and bird calls. These are points of resemblance identified by the publisher, not proof that one author took them from the other. VIZ notes that the reality-show framing appears in a US version of the Battle Royale manga; that detail should not be mistaken for evidence about the original novel’s influence on Collins.
How the works differ
VIZ describes The Hunger Games as narrated in the first person, while Battle Royale uses a roving third-person point of view. It also notes differences in science-fiction elements, the protagonists, and the endings. These distinctions do not erase the common premise, but they make a simple one-to-one account of the stories incomplete.

Their political and social emphasis also differs. A 2012 Gizmodo comparison discusses the different ways the games function in the two works. Its author said the comparison relied mainly on watching the Battle Royale Blu-ray because they did not have Takami’s book, so it should be treated as an adaptation-weighted comparison, not a close reading of both novels.
What Collins said about influence
In a New York Times interview excerpt reproduced by VIZ, Collins said: “I had never heard of that book or that author until my book was turned in.”

ABC News provides more context: Collins said that after Battle Royale was mentioned following submission, she asked her editor whether she should read it. According to Collins, the editor replied, “No, I don’t want that world in your head. Just continue what you’re doing.” Collins also described reality television and the Iraq War as inspirations, saying the ideas “started to fuse together in a very unsettling way.” Those statements explain her account of the book’s origins; they do not independently verify her private knowledge or settle the question of influence.
ABC News reported that Takami did not return its request for comment. It also said the film distributor Toei and the son of director Kinji Fukasaku declined interview requests, saying it would be premature to comment without reading the book or watching the movie. The cited coverage therefore supplies no direct statement from Takami endorsing or rejecting the accusation.

Does the evidence prove a rip-off?
No. The evidence supports three conclusions: Battle Royale came first; the stories share a recognizable premise and some reported story elements; and Collins said she had not heard of Takami’s book until after her manuscript was turned in. Similarity and chronology make the comparison reasonable, but neither establishes copying or intent. The cited sources do not prove that Collins had access to the earlier work, and they do not report a legal finding on the allegation.
That leaves room to discuss the resemblance without treating an accusation as a verdict. A claim that a work is legally plagiarized would require a separate legal analysis; the sources cited here do not resolve that question.
