Their romantic pairing was on screen in 10 Things I Hate About You; director Gil Junger’s account instead says Stiles briefly dated co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Why people associate Stiles and Ledger
Stiles and Ledger played Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona, the romantic leads in 10 Things I Hate About You. The film premiered in theaters on March 31, 1999, according to ABC News. Their convincing screen romance is the likely source of the question, but it does not establish that they were a couple off screen.

What the director said about Stiles’s co-star
In accounts of director Gil Junger’s appearance on the YouTube series Mirá a Quién Encontré, Grazia and Us Weekly report that Stiles briefly dated Joseph Gordon-Levitt, another 10 Things I Hate About You co-star. Junger was quoted as saying, “She, for a minute or 10, went out with Joseph Gordon-Levitt,” and described the pair as attracted to each other. Grazia and Us Weekly are reporting Junger’s recollection; the cited articles do not present a direct dating confirmation from Stiles or Gordon-Levitt.
How Stiles described Ledger
Stiles has spoken warmly about Ledger as a colleague. Recalling the poem scene in which Kat tells Patrick how she feels, she said Ledger “wasn’t trying to compete with me” and “stood back” to let the moment belong to her, according to ABC News. In a 2014 interview with Us Weekly, she called him “so nice” and described him as a “powerful, lovely human being.” Us Weekly

- Popular, pretty Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) is in dilemma. A family rule forbids her from dating until her unpopular, rebellious, boy-hating older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) gets a suitor of her own. In an attempt to win Bianca, a potential boyfriend (Andrew Keegan) desperately attempts to set Kat up with Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), another rebel whom may just be able to win Kat's heart.
What can be concluded
The cited reporting points to an on-screen romance between Stiles and Ledger and Junger’s recollection that Stiles briefly dated Gordon-Levitt. It does not establish that Stiles and Ledger dated, nor does it show that either actor issued a direct categorical denial. The careful answer is that available reporting does not indicate they were a real-life couple.
