Did Jules cheat on Rue in season one?
Season one does not establish Rue and Jules as an exclusive couple. Rue has romantic feelings for Jules, but Jules does not initially understand Rue’s support as romantic. Meanwhile, Jules develops an online connection with “Tyler,” who is actually Nate using a false identity. When that deception comes to light, Jules turns toward Rue.

That turn is emotionally significant, but it does not prove that Jules and Rue had agreed to exclusivity before then. In a 2019 interview, Hunter Schafer described Jules turning to her best friend after the toxic connection with men, calling it “such a beautiful moment for Jules” (TheWrap interview with Hunter Schafer). Her interpretation speaks to Jules’s emotional choice, not to a relationship agreement between the characters.
Were Rue and Jules together by the season-one finale?
The finale brings them together for a romantic kiss at the dance, after which Jules leaves for the city and Rue goes home. Schafer called the situation complicated and described the ending as a breakup, but her comments do not settle exactly when—or whether—the pair had become exclusive earlier in the season (Schafer’s interview about the finale).

The Jules-focused special later gives Jules space to reflect on how intense her relationship with Rue became and what she wants next (Schafer on the Jules special). That adds context to their bond; it does not retroactively establish that they had agreed to exclusivity in season one.
Did Jules cheat on Rue with Elliot?
In season two, the situation is clearer: Jules and Rue are dating, and Jules kisses Elliot. The episode account identifies the kiss as Jules cheating on Rue (“You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can,” first aired January 30, 2022). The kiss is the on-screen event; calling it cheating follows from the fact that Jules and Rue are together.

Does later season-three context change the answer?
A season-three report published April 27, 2026, describes a later wedding conversation and quotes creator Sam Levinson saying Rue was one reason Jules attended. The report leaves Jules’s feelings about Nate open and does not establish another act of cheating on Rue (TV Insider’s season-three report). It does not change the distinction between the undefined relationship in season one and the kiss with Elliot during season two.
