At the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, Moore won in the motion-picture musical or comedy acting category for playing Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance. The official Golden Globes results list Moore and the film as the winner; the official award video dates the moment to January 5, 2025.

It was Moore’s first Golden Globe win, but not her first nomination. She had been nominated three times before: for Ghost in 1991 and twice in 1997 in connection with If These Walls Could Talk, according to ABC News.
What did Demi Moore say in her acceptance speech?
Moore began by saying, “I’m just in shock right now,” then called it “the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor.” In the Los Angeles Times transcript, she recalled that a producer had called her a “popcorn actress” about 30 years earlier. She said she had taken the label to mean that work attracting audiences would not earn recognition.

She also described a later point when she wondered whether she had done what she was meant to do. Reading the The Substance script changed that feeling: “The universe told me that you’re not done.” Moore thanked writer-director Coralie Fargeat, co-star Margaret Qualley and the people who supported her.
Her closing thought turned from professional recognition to self-worth: “You will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.” The Golden Globes’ retrospective also singled out the “popcorn actress” story as one of the evening’s memorable moments.

Why did the speech connect with The Substance?
In the film, Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a former screen star and television fitness personality who is pushed out of her job. She uses an underground drug that creates a younger version of herself, played by Qualley. The film was written and directed by Fargeat.
The plot’s focus on aging and judgment gave Moore’s remarks a pointed connection to the role, but the speech was her account of her own experience. She described what it felt like to be dismissed, to doubt her place in the industry and then to encounter a script that made her feel she still had more to offer. She did not present the win as a solution to the broader pressures the film explores.
